  • 6. 3 Sustainability  and  growth   Since  its  founding  in  late  2009,  NOWCastSA  has  focused  on  sustainability  by:   • Cultivating  a  team  of  professionals  dedicated  to  the  nonprofit  mission  of  promoting  and   facilitating  an  inclusive  civic  conversation;   • Publishing  independent,  interesting,  relevant  and  accurate  stories,  events,  maps  and  unfiltered   videos;  and,   • Diversifying  its  funding  sources  and  reducing  its  expenses.         Originally  founded  as  a  supporting  organization  under  the  group  exemption  of  the  San  Antonio  Area   Foundation,  NOWCastSA  made  a  leap  towards  independence  by  filing  for  its  own  501(c)3  nonprofit   status  with  the  Internal  Revenue  Service  in  December  2012.  NOWCastSA  maintains  its  nonprofit  status   during  its  transition  period  thanks  to  the  support  of  its  new  fiscal  sponsor,  the  Bexar  County   Community  Health  Collaborative.   In  its  first  two  years,  NOWCastSA  was  funded  by  start-‐up  grants  from  the  John  S.  and  James  L.  Knight   Foundation,  CI:NOW  and  the  San  Antonio  Area  Foundation  and  in-‐kind  support  from  San  Antonio   Public  Library  and  Rackspace  Hosting.    In  2011,  it  expanded  its  funding  base  to  include  underwriting   and  sponsorship,  and  has  seen  significant  growth  in  this  area.    NOWCastSA  hired  a  Development   Director  in  2011,  which  has  resulted  in  an  increase  in  the  number  of  smaller  grants  received  from   private  foundations  and  corporations  and  new  growth  in  this  area.   To  compensate  for  slower  growth  in  grant  funding  and  a  decline  in  individual  donations,  NOWCastSA   reduced  its  expenses  by  nearly  30  percent  in  FY2013.  It  also  launched  a  membership  campaign  as  a   strategy  to  increase  private  giving,  and  increased  its  sponsorship  rates.
