9. Disabled people: at the sharp end of
historic & current exclusion and
discrimination…
• Treated as ‘other’, feared, pitied or viewed as of less
value
• Socially, culturally and economically excluded
• Institutionalised
• Little choice or control
• Impact of austerity: rights going backwards, poverty,
deprivation, poorer outcomes
10. Disabled people and charities – a
particular history !
• A history of being ‘done to’
• A history of being kept passive / grateful and
vulnerable recipients
• = A history of disability charities run by non –
disabled people who know best

IL - a pan-London Deaf and Disabled peoples organisation – run and controlled by Deaf/Disabled people: policy, voice and campaigning on disability equality issues at a regional, national and international level. We also provide capacity building support to over 65 local DDPOs in London
Whistle stop tour of some of my observations, views and ideas gained from nearly 30 years experience working for user-led organisations – run by and for the community the org serves – with a focus on DDPO ad disability equality
Diversity > inclusion. Diversity being invited to the party; inclusion is being invited to dance! – so we need both!

Handing over the tools of power to the community you serve – the skills, knowledge, the networks, the opportunities - makes real transformative change
Lots of ways of having Board meetings, lots of ways of understanding the money, lots of ways to support decision making and participation
Value lived experience can bring to strategic governance – currently pretty much ignored or eclipsed by the accountant and HR
