Antiscabies and antipedicular agents
1. ANTISCABIOUS AND ANTIPEDICULAR
AGENTS
•Definition
• Benzyl benzoate, Lindane, Permethrin, Crotomiton
Mr. Naga Prashant Koppuravuri, M.Pharm (Ph.D), FAGE.,
Assistant Professor,
Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry.
2. SCABICIDES
• Are agents used to control mite
Sarcoptes Scabei.
• An organism that thrives under
conditions of poor personal
hygiene.
3. PEDICULOCIDES
• Are used to eliminate lice from
head, body and crab.
• Ideal Scabicides and
pediculocides must kill the adult
parasites and destroy their eggs.
4. 1. Benzyl Benzoate
• Naturally occuring esterObtained from Peru
balsam And other resins.
• Effective scabicide when applied topically
• Immediate relief from itching probably results
from a local anaesthetic effect
O
5. • Applied topically as a lotion over
the entire dampened body,
except face.
• Complete cure is achieved with
single application of 25%
emulsion of benzyl benzoate in
single application.
6. 2. LINDANE
• 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexachlorocyclohexane
• Halogented hydrocarbon is prepared by
chlorination of benzene.
• A mixture of 5 isomers have been isolated in this
process.(α,β,γ,δ,ε)

7. • Isomer γ is responsible for the activity.
• Is employed locally as a cream, lotion or
shampoo for the treatment of Scabies and
pediculosis.
• The action is of threefold
• Direct contact poison.
• Has a fumigant effect
• Acts as a stomach poison.
10. • It exerts a lethal action against lice, ticks,
mites & fleas.
• Acts on the nerve cell membranes of the
parasites to disrupt sodium channel
conductance.
• Pediculocide for the treatment of head lice.
• A single application of a 1% solution is known
to give the effect.
