- 5. Current Situation • Diabetes / Heart Disease exploding! • Less than 50% have HbA1c <7 • Western Sydney (Non-Indigenous) • 42% diabetes (1 in 3 unaware) • Young Indigenous Population • Not just dying young that’s the problem!
- 6. What Does The Future Look Like? • Younger at diagnosis = earlier death and < quality of life • Diagnosis in teens and 20’s • High blood pressure and cholesterol • Kidney/eyes breakdown • Mental health
- 7. The Research : Indigenous Specific • Process can begin at a BMI of 23! • Up to 20 years for sugars to rise • We respond very well to lifestyle interventions • We respond best in a culturally safe environment
