1. English 308; The Short Story
INTRODUCTORY
PRESENTATION
BY MADDIE-BLAIR WRIGHT
2. ABOUT ME
My name Is Maddie-Blair Wright and I’m from
Westchester New York and I enjoy, above all else,
reading. I’m a huge fan of a plethora of authors but
if I absolutely had to choose, my favorites would
be…..
That’s me
And
that’s
home!
3. CORMAC MCCARTHY
Cormac McCarthy is a brilliant
novelist all around. He’s very
graphic and is not for everyone, but
if you have a taste for that then I
highly recommend a few of his
works such as The Road, No Country
for Old Men, and my personal
favorite, Blood Meridian or the
Evening Redness in the West.
The movie adaption of The
Road was terrible. If you
watched this I sincerely
apologize and I would be
happy to lend you my
personal copy of the book
instead.
4. RAY BRADBURY
Ray Bradbury is another
personal favorite of
mine due to his very
strange style of writing.
He doesn’t necessarily
stick to one genre as
some authors do but
mainly does science
fiction as seen in my
favorite one of his books,
The Martian Chronicles.
He is also the author of
Fahrenheit 461, another
fantastic novel that I
highly recommend.
Fun Fact! Curiosity, the mars rover
launched in November 2011, had it’s initial
landing point named after Ray Bradbury.
Curiosity reached Bradbury Point on August
22, 2012, successfully beaming information
from the surface of this planet in a fashion
suited for one this novelist’s works.
5. ERNEST HEMMINGWAY
What kind of student would I
be if I did not mention the
fantastic Mr. Hemmingway? A
brilliant man to the very end
and also a prosaic master of
subtleties; he has written
many great works including
(but not limited to) The Sun
Also Rises, The Old Man and
the Sea, and A Farewell to
*Disclaimer; Hemmingway’s style depends a
Arms.
lot on interpretation. DO NOT READ IF YOU DO
NOT WANT TO BE ENGAGED; YOU WILL NOT
UNDERSTAND IF YOU’RE NOT PAYING
ATTENTION.***
6. JACK LONDON
Seen here is the
infamous Jack
London posing for
a boxing
magazine in 1904.
Jack London was
a great writer but
he’s just one of
those authors that
you have to get.
You either like him
or you hate him;
there’s no middle
ground for this
man, especially in
his writing.
He’s famous for his
very rugged and
“manly” novels
such as White Fang
and The Call of the
Wild following
similar motifs such
as the Yukon of
Alaska and the
conflict between
man and nature. If
you’re interested in
either of these
things, then he’s
the right author for
you.
7. JOHN RONALD REUEL TOLKIEN
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (J.R.R.
Tolkien) is a famous World War One
veteran turned author known for his
fantasy novels such as The Hobbit
and the Lord of the Rings. Gartering
inspiration from Norse mythology, he
elaborately creates characters and
landscapes enthralling enough to
inspire young men and women for
generations, me included. He tends
to be a bit lengthy and verbose but
all in all he is a fantastic author
delivers a brilliant story.
