The challenge of Leadership
Cile Chavez, the superintendent in Littleton,
Colorado, says,
“My role is not so much to make thing happen
but to make sense of things to show how things
fit together”(Chavez, 1992)
The Challenge of Leadership
Salt Creek, Illinois, superintendent Maud Hall believes that
a feel for what is important, a sense of quality, a caring
attitude, and a commitment to bring these to life in the
school are what drive successful leaders. To her,
leadership is “ the ability to bring out the best the others, to
motivate others to take leadership roles in the school
system” ( Hall, 1992).
Value Added Leadership
Thomas and Sergiovanni viewed the leadership
from a “developmental perspective and see it
as comparison of four stages:
Barting
Building
Bonding
Binding
Authority of Leadership
`Four kinds of leaders’ authorities:
Bureaucratic
Personal
Moral
Professional
To Plato
Until…political greatness[leadership] and
wisdom meet in one and those commoner
natures who pursue either to the exclusion of
the other or compelled to stand aside, cities will
never have rest from their evils-nor the human
race[1156, p.431].
To Machiavelli:
One must be a fox in order to recognize traps, and
a lion to righten off wolves….So it follows that s
prudent ruler cannot, and should not , honor his
word when it places him at a disadvantage….if all
men were good, this precept would not be good;
but because men are wretched creatures who
would not keep their word to you, you need not
keep your word to them[1961, P. 100]

They must:
plant the seeds of community
nurture fledging community
protct the community one it emerges

Principals lead by:
Serving
inviting others to share in the burdens of
leadership
knowing
Being
Relationship
1.The relationship is based on influence
2.Leaders and followers are the people in this
relationship
3.Leaders and followers intend real change
4.Leaders and followers develop mutual
purposes
