4. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
(COPD) is a lung ailment that is characterized
by a persistent blockage of airflow from the
lungs.
It is an under-diagnosed, life-threatening lung
disease that interferes with normal breathing
and is not fully reversible.
COPD:
5. Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease
(COLD)
Chronic Lower Respiratory Disease
(CLRD)
Other names for COPD
6. There are two main forms of COPD:
1. Chronic bronchitis, which involves a long-term cough
with mucus
2. Emphysema, which involves damage to the lungs over
time
COPD Forms
Most people with COPD have a combination of both conditions.
7. Causes:
Exposure to certain gases or fumes
in the workplace
Exposure to heavy amounts of
secondhand smoke and pollution
Smoking
lack of "alpha-1 antitrypsin"
Frequent use of a cooking fire
without proper ventilation

12. Diagnosis
The best test for COPD is a lung function
test called spirometry.
This involves blowing out as hard as possible
into a small machine that tests lung capacity.
The results can be checked right away.
13. Diagnosis
Using a stethoscope to listen to the lungs can
also be helpful. But sometimes, the lungs
sound normal, even when a person has COPD.
Imaging tests of the lungs, such as x-rays and
CT scans, can be helpful. With an x-ray, the
lungs may look normal, even when a person
has COPD. A CT scan will usually show signs
of COPD.
14. Treatment?
Goals Of COPD Treatment:
1.Relieve symptoms
2.Slow the progression of disease
3.Improve exercise tolerance
4.Prevent and manage Complications
5.Improve overall health
15. Treatment
There is no cure for COPD
But there are many things you can do to relieve symptoms and keep the disease
from getting worse.
Oxygen Therapy
Surgery
Quit Smoking
Medication
Limit exposures to Dust Particles, Chemicals and Fumes
Pulmonary rehabilitation
