Presentation Topic: The impacts of
University Wits in Literature of the
Renaissance Period
What is University wits?
The term university wits is applied to a group of English
men of letters who flourished in the Elizabethan age
under the influence of the Renaissance. The group was
more or less Constituted of Some Young University
Scholars highly Cultivated Literary men who took writing
or their Profession they are Called University wits
Because they were associated with the University of
Cambridge or oxford. They Passes a special significance
and they exerted a direct influence upon Shakespeare.
They were romantic in their attitude and represented
the Spirit of the Renaissance.
Contribution of the University wits to Drama
The University wits Contributed to the formation of the English comedy which
blossomed forth in the hands of Shakespeare.
John Lyly (1554-1606):
John Lyly the Courtier made notable contribution to the formation of the English
Comedy his Charminy romantic Plays are all Comedies. his plays are:-
Women in the Moon.
Endymion
Seppho and Phao.
Alexander and Campaspe
Miday
Mother Bombie and Love’s Meta-morphosis.
Lyly’s Comedies mythological and allegorical plays are extremely witty in
Character, wit and humor, found generally in Sparking dialogues characterize
dialogues gave Shakespeare an excellent model to follow and he is Probably
indebted to Lyly for his first teaching in Court Style.
In Elizabethan Proses fiction:
During the later half of 16th Century a number of prose romance were Produced. They
were all written in the new style Called Euphuistic style, Cultivated and Developed by
John Lyly.
Lyly Style Euphuism is full of grace wit splendor with carefully shaped and balanced
Sentence. The Euphuistic style was widely popular in the Elizabethan world, and let
to both appreciate and parodic imitation in Subsequent literature. Lyly’s Euphuism,
the Chief motto is “A golden Sentence is worth a world of treasure
Gorge Peele:- (1558-1597)
George Peele was almost Certainly a successful plays as well as
Playwright. The famous Chronicle of king Edward I, The old
wives' Tale, The love of king David and Fair baths hebe etc are
his great Plays. His Plays have romantic, Satirical and historical
evidence, His Style is Violent to the Point of absurdity. He has
moment of real Poetry. He handled Blank Verse with more ease
and variety. He was fluent and had a Sense of humor and
Pathos. In Short he represents a great advance upon the earliest
drama and become Popular among the play wrights of his time
for the poetical qualities of his verse.
Robert Green (1558-92):
Robert Greene was Probably encouraged to write for the stage by Marlowe’s success
with Tamburlaine Green’s five Plays are:-
 Friar Bacon and Friar Bungay
 James iv.
 The Comical History of Alphonsus king of Aragoz.
 A looking lass for London any England.
 And The History of Orlando Furioso.
Of this plays the most popular is friar bacon and Friar Bungay. It is romantic
Comedy.
Thomas Nashe (1567-160)
The most important dramatic works of Thomas
Nashe are The Isle of Dogs (1567) and Summer’s
Last will (1600) Thomas Nashe was the real
Successor of Greene, the realist and satirist. He
was an out Standing Picaresque author of the
Period. He wrote against the puritans in general.
In Prose he was the Creator of new genre.
Thomas lodge (1558-1625):
Thomas lodge abandoned law for literature His first
romance The Detectable History of Forbonius and
pricilla appeared in 1584 and Scilaes Metanorphosis in
1589. His Second and bat known romance Rasalynde, it
is Said that Shakespeare followed him Closely in his
Plot of as you like it. He Probably Collaborated with
Shakespeare in Henry IV.
Thomas Kyd (1558-94):
Among the University wits Thomas kyd, Violent and
extravert youth as the was did much to popularize
Sencan tradition of blood and thunder. In his Play the
Spanish Tragedy. He dealt with the theme of revenge. It
hold a unique place in dramatic literature, recalling
back to Gorbuduc and forward to Shakespeare early
Plays, probably even to Hamlet and king Lear.
Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593)
Christopher Marlowe, One of the most striking figures of the English Renaissance,
is the true founder of the popular English drama. He is really the greatest figure
in pre-shakespearean drama. He has left behind powerful tragedies:
 Tamburlaine
 Doctor Faustus
 The Jew of Math
 Edward II
Conclusion
University wits have a fondness of introducing heroic themes in their dramas .
They often take it from the lives of great figures . They have heroic treatment to
the heroic theme.

  • 4. Presentation Topic: The impacts of University Wits in Literature of the Renaissance Period
  • 5. What is University wits? The term university wits is applied to a group of English men of letters who flourished in the Elizabethan age under the influence of the Renaissance. The group was more or less Constituted of Some Young University Scholars highly Cultivated Literary men who took writing or their Profession they are Called University wits Because they were associated with the University of Cambridge or oxford. They Passes a special significance and they exerted a direct influence upon Shakespeare. They were romantic in their attitude and represented the Spirit of the Renaissance.
  • 6. Contribution of the University wits to Drama The University wits Contributed to the formation of the English comedy which blossomed forth in the hands of Shakespeare.
  • 7. John Lyly (1554-1606): John Lyly the Courtier made notable contribution to the formation of the English Comedy his Charminy romantic Plays are all Comedies. his plays are:- Women in the Moon. Endymion Seppho and Phao. Alexander and Campaspe Miday Mother Bombie and Love’s Meta-morphosis. Lyly’s Comedies mythological and allegorical plays are extremely witty in Character, wit and humor, found generally in Sparking dialogues characterize dialogues gave Shakespeare an excellent model to follow and he is Probably indebted to Lyly for his first teaching in Court Style.
  • 8. In Elizabethan Proses fiction: During the later half of 16th Century a number of prose romance were Produced. They were all written in the new style Called Euphuistic style, Cultivated and Developed by John Lyly. Lyly Style Euphuism is full of grace wit splendor with carefully shaped and balanced Sentence. The Euphuistic style was widely popular in the Elizabethan world, and let to both appreciate and parodic imitation in Subsequent literature. Lyly’s Euphuism, the Chief motto is “A golden Sentence is worth a world of treasure
  • 9. Gorge Peele:- (1558-1597) George Peele was almost Certainly a successful plays as well as Playwright. The famous Chronicle of king Edward I, The old wives' Tale, The love of king David and Fair baths hebe etc are his great Plays. His Plays have romantic, Satirical and historical evidence, His Style is Violent to the Point of absurdity. He has moment of real Poetry. He handled Blank Verse with more ease and variety. He was fluent and had a Sense of humor and Pathos. In Short he represents a great advance upon the earliest drama and become Popular among the play wrights of his time for the poetical qualities of his verse.

Robert Green (1558-92): Robert Greene was Probably encouraged to write for the stage by Marlowe’s success with Tamburlaine Green’s five Plays are:-  Friar Bacon and Friar Bungay  James iv.  The Comical History of Alphonsus king of Aragoz.  A looking lass for London any England.  And The History of Orlando Furioso. Of this plays the most popular is friar bacon and Friar Bungay. It is romantic Comedy.

Thomas Nashe (1567-160) The most important dramatic works of Thomas Nashe are The Isle of Dogs (1567) and Summer’s Last will (1600) Thomas Nashe was the real Successor of Greene, the realist and satirist. He was an out Standing Picaresque author of the Period. He wrote against the puritans in general. In Prose he was the Creator of new genre.
  • 12. Thomas lodge (1558-1625): Thomas lodge abandoned law for literature His first romance The Detectable History of Forbonius and pricilla appeared in 1584 and Scilaes Metanorphosis in 1589. His Second and bat known romance Rasalynde, it is Said that Shakespeare followed him Closely in his Plot of as you like it. He Probably Collaborated with Shakespeare in Henry IV.
  • 13. Thomas Kyd (1558-94): Among the University wits Thomas kyd, Violent and extravert youth as the was did much to popularize Sencan tradition of blood and thunder. In his Play the Spanish Tragedy. He dealt with the theme of revenge. It hold a unique place in dramatic literature, recalling back to Gorbuduc and forward to Shakespeare early Plays, probably even to Hamlet and king Lear.
  • 14. Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593) Christopher Marlowe, One of the most striking figures of the English Renaissance, is the true founder of the popular English drama. He is really the greatest figure in pre-shakespearean drama. He has left behind powerful tragedies:  Tamburlaine  Doctor Faustus  The Jew of Math  Edward II
  • 15. Conclusion University wits have a fondness of introducing heroic themes in their dramas . They often take it from the lives of great figures . They have heroic treatment to the heroic theme.
