More about our story
ASHA oversees programs across the country
that give people with physical and developmental
disabilities the chance to play ice hockey in an
environment adapted to their level of ability.
In addition to physical hockey skills, the program
helps develop characteristics like dependability,
self-reliance, concentration, teamwork, and other
life skills. The program uses the sport to help the
players be more successful on and off the ice.
What We Do
The American Special Hockey Association
(ASHA) program was founded in 2000 as a way
for players with developmental disabilities to learn
and grow by playing ice hockey.
Athletes of all ages
Over 50 ASHA programs nationally
Players range in disabilities and their playing
abilities
It is more than playing sports and being active
Our story
ASHA looks to bring the sport of ice hockey to
those fans that may have felt it was out of reach
due to a developmental disability and resigned
themselves to the sidelines.
The ASHA athletes are taught not only how to
skate and play the game of ice hockey, modified
to their ability level, they are taught on and off ice
lessons in teamwork and belonging.
