SLIDE 1: PDHPE Rationale
The Importance of Teaching PDHPE in Primary Schools.
Miss Jong 4J
SLIDE 2: The importance of PDHPE
“is developing in students the knowledge and skills, values and attitudes
that will enable them to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.”
“focus on encouraging students to make informed decisions related to
health and physical activity and develop positive attitudes towards a healthy
lifestyle.”
o (NSW Board of Studies, PDHPE syllabus 2006)
SLIDE 3:
Students are engaging in physical activity and are participating in healthy, active and
social lifestyles. This will encourage students to work in positive teams and build positive
relationships.
SLIDE 4:
By participating in physical activity, children are communicating with each other in
positive ways as they are interacting with class activities. It is important for them to problem solve
and make the right decisions about themselves by identifying what is appropriate in their daily lives
and how it will affect their futures.
SLIDE 5: Healthy Choices.
It is important for students to make their own choices about their health. To
accomplish this influential parents and teachers are to guide their children
and students to their bright futures. Students hold their own keys to their
futures as this is important for parents and teachers to direct them to have
active lifestyles by having them achieve growth and development to make
the right personal health choices.
SLIDE 6:
The most important aspect about PDHPE is for children to have fun and stay
healthy and active.
YouTube Video
This YouTube video will inform you adventurous parents about the importance of physical
activity your child should be receiving and achieving. This video was created in Canada however the
importance of physical activity applies everywhere around the world, including Australia. So come

Three Student Pages
This page will show you what adventurous students of 4J have been learning about PDHPE
and why they think PDHPE is important to them. This will change every month as each student
deserves to express their knowledge about themselves and PDHPE. This will demonstrate the growth
and development of each unique child in the class have achieved.
STUDENT ONE:
Name: Nathaniel Scott.
Age: 9 Years Old.
Likes: Basketball and Science.
Favourite Continent: Asia. My family and I went to the Great Wall of China in the summer
holidays and we experienced a winter Christmas for the first time!
Favourite Sports:
Basketball is my favourite sport because I like the rush at the last few minutes of the game.
Also it gives me ideas when I play basketball at school and in my local team.
Swimming is my second favourite sport as I have a swimming pool in my backyard that I
swim in every Saturday with my dad while my dog barks on the outside of the pool.
Why I think PDHPE is important: I think PDHPE is important because it teaches me what to
eat and Miss Jong told us that it is okay to have junk food as it is called “sometime food”. What I
learn in class, I take it home with me and I tell my parents what healthy food we should be eating so
my baby sister can learn about healthy eating too. I also like learning about other games when we
have PE every Friday afternoons because I can play it the next week with my friends during lunch
time at the oval.
STUDENT TWO:
Name: Elle Greenaway.
Age: 9 Years Old.
Likes: Watching Disney movies and hip hop dancing.
Favourite Continent: My favourite continent is Africa because I love jungle animals. I want
to see a monkey at the zoo.
Favourite Sports:
My favourite sports are dancing, swimming and tennis. I love dancing because I love the
competitions we have and I have so much fun with my friends.
Swimming is fun as I can float on my back while looking up in the sky and make imaginative
figures with the clouds.
Tennis is enjoyable as I love playing with my cousins in the tennis court once a month. It’s so
funny when my cousin spins around when she tries to hit the oncoming ball and misses.
Why I think PDHPE is important: I think PDHPE is important because I love exercising. I love
dancing as it involves all body movements and there are a range of different types of dancing styles.
I also love eating bananas because monkeys love eating bananas!
STUDENT THREE:
Name: Spencer Morgan.
Age: 9 Years Old.
Likes: Soccer and Maths.
Favourite Continent: Europe is my favourite continent because they also love soccer.
Favourite Sports: My favourite sports are soccer, NRL and baseball. I love the Socceroos and
cannot wait for the Soccer World Cup in Brazil. I was so happy when Sydney Roosters won the grand
finals last year in NRL. When I went to New York for my mum’s birthday, we went to watch the
Yankees game.
Why I think PDHPE is important: I think PDHPE is important because I learn not only about
different sports but I also learn about healthy eating. I also learn about the safety around my
community and in my school environments.
Personal Blog
The following entries below are tutorials which I have attended during the 2014 Autumn
Semester in the unit ‘Primary Personal Development, Health and Physical Education’ (101576). These
include two PE tutorials and two PDH tutorials.
WEEK 2 PE TUTORIAL: Tuesday 4th
March, 2014.
Today we had a two hour practical lesson on the oval. The main focus on today’s lesson was
to imbed ‘Game Sense’ in our practical session. Firstly, we played warm up games that involved four
groups positioned at each corners of an invisible square. We than had to use our soccer skills that we
already know, to take the other team’s balls by running across to each other’s bases. During the
warm up game, Rachel kept stopping us in between games to tell/teach us tactics about how to
kick/dribble the ball or throw the balls. To get the class engaging, she asked students to demonstrate
skills to the whole class in improve the way some students are kicking the ball and throwing it. This
engaged us to think how to improve our strategies as we played the game, instead of making us
understanding the skills before playing. By playing the game and finding out what an individual is
doing wrong and fixing it at the same time, makes the individual develop their skills further. Also,
Rachel taught us about free ended games and defence games. We played Frisbee and football and it
got everyone engaged and motivated as everyone was moving in every direction.
WEEK 12 PE TUTORIAL: Tuesday 29th
April, 2014.
Today’s practical session was the last PE tutorial we had for the semester. We focused on
dancing and movement that involved music and objects. In today’s lesson, we were in the sports hall
so we could listen to the music properly in order to hear the beat. Rachel had given us tips on how to
engage students in dancing as there are different elements of dancing. She first showed the class a
video clip which used objects that was in cooperated in their dance moves. It was interesting how
they used the objects in their dance moves and it engaged the class of wanting to do the same. So,
Rachel got the class to get a ball each and forma circle. She than played a beat on her laptop for the
class to hear. With the balls, we were to bounce it to the beat. After a while when everyone were in
sync with beat, Rachel instructed the class move in one direction and to pick up the beat again.
Slowly, other students were given other equipment to make different sounds to the beat as it also
made different movements by using that particular object. The point of this activity was to use
objects while we were listening to music and how we could add objects to dancing and have the idea
at the back of our minds to teach it to children while they are dancing. When we finished using
objects, we danced to children songs. These songs include the chicken dance, hokey pokey and the
nutbush. It was very interesting how the whole class were participating in the songs and had smiles
on their faces as it was fun. To finish the last practical lesson, we did yoga to relax. I learnt that it is
okay for students and children to giggle while participating in yoga, just as long as they are engaging
with the activity.
WEEK 6 PDH TUTORIAL: Tuesday 11th
April, 2014.
The topic for this week’s PDH tutorial was on nutrition. During the tutorial, there were
discussions on how to introduce healthy food and snacks to students as classroom teachers. There
were also discussions on how sometimes students are allowed to have junk food occasionally as it
can be classified as ‘sometime food’ and not make them feel guilty if they do bring it to school.
Teachers are to understand that there will be students in their class that will bring their traditional
food from home to eat during recess and lunch times and it is important to make that student feel
included of what they are eating before they go to the playground. Also, to have students interested
in their food, teachers can make food in front of them as a class activity on healthy eating as this will
engage them in knowing what they are eating and what ingredients are within their food. What I
have taken out of this tutorial was that it is okay for children to experience different foods and
children are allowed to have junk foods once in a while, not ruling it out of their diets permanently.
WEEK 9 PDH TUTORIAL: Tuesday 22nd
April, 2014.
Today’s lesson was the most interesting tutorial lesson I have attended. The topic for this
week was on puberty. To my surprise, children are exposed to puberty at a very young age, so it is
important for teachers to understand how to tackle any issues students are having due to the
changes of their bodies. They are to be ready to explain to their students why their bodies are going
through different changes overtime. During class, Rachel handed out a puberty textbook informing
the meaning of puberty and how it can change a child’s mind set. Within the textbook, there were
illustrations of human beings in cartoon forms. The pictures were appropriate because they were
not photos of real life human beings. Using this textbook, it will be appropriate in teaching puberty
to senior students in primary schools with their parent’s permission as it is a very informative
textbook. During class discussions, there were classmates explaining their experiences of how they
have approached puberty to their children or to their teens who they coach in their community.
When Rachel addressed the class, she told us that when children are asking questions about the
human body, it is a good sign because they are getting the information from an adult and not
receiving it elsewhere and making the wrong decisions.
Overall Reflections on Teaching PDHPE
PE REFLECTION:
Throughout this whole semester, I have learnt many different topics about PE which have
made me understand more about the importance of PDHPE in primary schools. It has shaped my
views on how to motivate children in physical activity. I have learnt that PE is not just about learning
about the particular sports’ skills but enjoying playing the game. While playing the game, it is okay to
stop students and tell/teach them how to use the equipment in a more improved manner but have
them experience using the equipment first as it is all about the child’s participation. While
demonstrating how to use equipment, have students also copying you while explaining have
students contribute ideas how to modify the games. This will demonstrate their decision making and
communication with PE by illustrating their creative minds with the class. Therefore, to be an active
teacher in a primary school, it is important to have a creative mind to modify games to encourage
and engage all students. I have learnt that to make young children engage in activities have them
interact with one another.
PDH REFLECTION:
Learning about PDH this semester has broadened my knowledge about the theory behind
the human activities in day-to-day lives. It not only taught me how to teach children about healthy
eating and playing safe in their environment, it also taught me what was appropriate to teach and
how to approach difficult situations. In different tutorials, class discussions have extended my
understandings about the topics with students expressing their experiences. By that, it has helped
me take notes on how to approach topics with confidence and different skills. I have come to
understand that PDH is not just learning about eating healthy and learning about sport but it has
more context as students can learn about all different types of areas affecting the human body.
These include the active lifestyle students should be achieving and understanding safety of
themselves and others around them. Also, explaining some topics is acceptable just as long as it is
appropriate to the relevant topic.

This will encourage students to work in positive teams and build positive relationships. SLIDE 4: By participating in physical activity, children are communicating with each other in positive ways as they are interacting with class activities. It is important for them to problem solve and make the right decisions about themselves by identifying what is appropriate in their daily lives and how it will affect their futures. SLIDE 5: Healthy Choices. It is important for students to make their own choices about their health. To accomplish this influential parents and teachers are to guide their children and students to their bright futures. Students hold their own keys to their futures as this is important for parents and teachers to direct them to have active lifestyles by having them achieve growth and development to make the right personal health choices. Favourite Continent: Asia. My family and I went to the Great Wall of China in the summer holidays and we experienced a winter Christmas for the first time!
  • 3. Favourite Sports: Basketball is my favourite sport because I like the rush at the last few minutes of the game. Also it gives me ideas when I play basketball at school and in my local team. Swimming is my second favourite sport as I have a swimming pool in my backyard that I swim in every Saturday with my dad while my dog barks on the outside of the pool. Why I think PDHPE is important: I think PDHPE is important because it teaches me what to eat and Miss Jong told us that it is okay to have junk food as it is called “sometime food”. What I learn in class, I take it home with me and I tell my parents what healthy food we should be eating so my baby sister can learn about healthy eating too. I also like learning about other games when we have PE every Friday afternoons because I can play it the next week with my friends during lunch time at the oval. STUDENT TWO: Name: Elle Greenaway. Age: 9 Years Old. Likes: Watching Disney movies and hip hop dancing. Favourite Continent: My favourite continent is Africa because I love jungle animals. I want to see a monkey at the zoo. Favourite Sports: My favourite sports are dancing, swimming and tennis. I love dancing because I love the competitions we have and I have so much fun with my friends. Swimming is fun as I can float on my back while looking up in the sky and make imaginative figures with the clouds. Tennis is enjoyable as I love playing with my cousins in the tennis court once a month. It’s so funny when my cousin spins around when she tries to hit the oncoming ball and misses. Why I think PDHPE is important: I think PDHPE is important because I love exercising. I love dancing as it involves all body movements and there are a range of different types of dancing styles. I also love eating bananas because monkeys love eating bananas! STUDENT THREE: Name: Spencer Morgan. Age: 9 Years Old. Likes: Soccer and Maths. Favourite Continent: Europe is my favourite continent because they also love soccer.
  • 4. Favourite Sports: My favourite sports are soccer, NRL and baseball. I love the Socceroos and cannot wait for the Soccer World Cup in Brazil. I was so happy when Sydney Roosters won the grand finals last year in NRL. When I went to New York for my mum’s birthday, we went to watch the Yankees game. Why I think PDHPE is important: I think PDHPE is important because I learn not only about different sports but I also learn about healthy eating. I also learn about the safety around my community and in my school environments. Personal Blog The following entries below are tutorials which I have attended during the 2014 Autumn Semester in the unit ‘Primary Personal Development, Health and Physical Education’ (101576). These include two PE tutorials and two PDH tutorials. WEEK 2 PE TUTORIAL: Tuesday 4th March, 2014. Today we had a two hour practical lesson on the oval. The main focus on today’s lesson was to imbed ‘Game Sense’ in our practical session. Firstly, we played warm up games that involved four groups positioned at each corners of an invisible square. We than had to use our soccer skills that we already know, to take the other team’s balls by running across to each other’s bases. During the warm up game, Rachel kept stopping us in between games to tell/teach us tactics about how to kick/dribble the ball or throw the balls. To get the class engaging, she asked students to demonstrate skills to the whole class in improve the way some students are kicking the ball and throwing it. This engaged us to think how to improve our strategies as we played the game, instead of making us understanding the skills before playing. By playing the game and finding out what an individual is doing wrong and fixing it at the same time, makes the individual develop their skills further. Also, Rachel taught us about free ended games and defence games. We played Frisbee and football and it got everyone engaged and motivated as everyone was moving in every direction. WEEK 12 PE TUTORIAL: Tuesday 29th April, 2014. Today’s practical session was the last PE tutorial we had for the semester. We focused on dancing and movement that involved music and objects. In today’s lesson, we were in the sports hall so we could listen to the music properly in order to hear the beat. Rachel had given us tips on how to engage students in dancing as there are different elements of dancing. She first showed the class a video clip which used objects that was in cooperated in their dance moves. It was interesting how they used the objects in their dance moves and it engaged the class of wanting to do the same. So, Rachel got the class to get a ball each and forma circle. She than played a beat on her laptop for the class to hear. With the balls, we were to bounce it to the beat. After a while when everyone were in sync with beat, Rachel instructed the class move in one direction and to pick up the beat again. Slowly, other students were given other equipment to make different sounds to the beat as it also made different movements by using that particular object. The point of this activity was to use objects while we were listening to music and how we could add objects to dancing and have the idea at the back of our minds to teach it to children while they are dancing. When we finished using objects, we danced to children songs. These songs include the chicken dance, hokey pokey and the nutbush. It was very interesting how the whole class were participating in the songs and had smiles
  • 5. on their faces as it was fun. To finish the last practical lesson, we did yoga to relax. I learnt that it is okay for students and children to giggle while participating in yoga, just as long as they are engaging with the activity. WEEK 6 PDH TUTORIAL: Tuesday 11th April, 2014. The topic for this week’s PDH tutorial was on nutrition. During the tutorial, there were discussions on how to introduce healthy food and snacks to students as classroom teachers. There were also discussions on how sometimes students are allowed to have junk food occasionally as it can be classified as ‘sometime food’ and not make them feel guilty if they do bring it to school. Teachers are to understand that there will be students in their class that will bring their traditional food from home to eat during recess and lunch times and it is important to make that student feel included of what they are eating before they go to the playground. Also, to have students interested in their food, teachers can make food in front of them as a class activity on healthy eating as this will engage them in knowing what they are eating and what ingredients are within their food. What I have taken out of this tutorial was that it is okay for children to experience different foods and children are allowed to have junk foods once in a while, not ruling it out of their diets permanently. WEEK 9 PDH TUTORIAL: Tuesday 22nd April, 2014. Today’s lesson was the most interesting tutorial lesson I have attended. The topic for this week was on puberty. To my surprise, children are exposed to puberty at a very young age, so it is important for teachers to understand how to tackle any issues students are having due to the changes of their bodies. They are to be ready to explain to their students why their bodies are going through different changes overtime. During class, Rachel handed out a puberty textbook informing the meaning of puberty and how it can change a child’s mind set. Within the textbook, there were illustrations of human beings in cartoon forms. The pictures were appropriate because they were not photos of real life human beings. Using this textbook, it will be appropriate in teaching puberty to senior students in primary schools with their parent’s permission as it is a very informative textbook. During class discussions, there were classmates explaining their experiences of how they have approached puberty to their children or to their teens who they coach in their community. When Rachel addressed the class, she told us that when children are asking questions about the human body, it is a good sign because they are getting the information from an adult and not receiving it elsewhere and making the wrong decisions.
  • 6. Overall Reflections on Teaching PDHPE PE REFLECTION: Throughout this whole semester, I have learnt many different topics about PE which have made me understand more about the importance of PDHPE in primary schools. It has shaped my views on how to motivate children in physical activity. I have learnt that PE is not just about learning about the particular sports’ skills but enjoying playing the game. While playing the game, it is okay to stop students and tell/teach them how to use the equipment in a more improved manner but have them experience using the equipment first as it is all about the child’s participation. While demonstrating how to use equipment, have students also copying you while explaining have students contribute ideas how to modify the games. This will demonstrate their decision making and communication with PE by illustrating their creative minds with the class. Therefore, to be an active teacher in a primary school, it is important to have a creative mind to modify games to encourage and engage all students. I have learnt that to make young children engage in activities have them interact with one another. PDH REFLECTION: Learning about PDH this semester has broadened my knowledge about the theory behind the human activities in day-to-day lives. It not only taught me how to teach children about healthy eating and playing safe in their environment, it also taught me what was appropriate to teach and how to approach difficult situations. In different tutorials, class discussions have extended my understandings about the topics with students expressing their experiences. By that, it has helped me take notes on how to approach topics with confidence and different skills. I have come to understand that PDH is not just learning about eating healthy and learning about sport but it has more context as students can learn about all different types of areas affecting the human body. These include the active lifestyle students should be achieving and understanding safety of themselves and others around them. Also, explaining some topics is acceptable just as long as it is appropriate to the relevant topic.
