This lecture discusses key concepts in public health including definitions of health, its dimensions, and determinants of health. According to the World Health Organization, health is defined as complete physical, mental and social well-being, not just the absence of disease. Health has multiple dimensions including physical, mental, social, spiritual and emotional. Determinants of health include biological, behavioral, environmental, socio-economic, and health system factors. The lecture contrasts positive health as perfect functioning, negative health as recently discharged from illness, and optimum health as a realistic compromise between the two.
