• The root of the word terrorism is taken from a
Latin term ‘’terror’’ that means “to frighten”.
• An intentional act of violence or use of power
by a non-state actor for political purpose.

• Cultural & Ethnic tension
• Religious Extremism
6. Cultural & Ethnic tension
• Ethnicity: The fact or state of belonging to a
social group that has a common national or
cultural tradition
• Greater social hostilities and grievances
between different ethnic, religious and
linguistic groups.
• Usually have independent territorial
objectives.
• Usually the minority group wants Liberation
from the dominant group of state.
7. Cultural & Ethnic tension
• Forming of liberation movements and
sometime become violent and take weapon
against state.
Ethnic conflicts:
Kurdish civil war against Iraq : 139,000-320,000
killed. Millions of Kurds displaced and turned
refugees
Indo-kashmir conflict: Killed more than 80,000
people in kashmir by Indian Miltary.
8. Religious Extremism
• An individual or group who holds to its
ideology, does not tolerate other viewpoint
and tries to impose his philosophy/ideology
through violent means or use of force
• Using the name of religion but itself religion
doesn’t permit the violence.
For example:
• Islamic militants groups in muslim world.
• Zionism movement
• Sectarian war in Muslim world
9. Terrorism is not the Monopoly of
any Religion
• Any religion in world does not allow the killing
of innocents.
• ‘’And if anyone saves a life,
it would be as if he saved the life of all
people’’.
