Work and Energy
6.1 Work Done by a Constant Force
( )Jjoule1mN1 =⋅
If the object moves, hence work was done only if the
resultant force causes and object to move in the same
direction as the resultant force
In order to change the state of motion, force has to be
applied-Newton’s first law of motion
6.1 Work Done by a Constant Force
( )sFW θcos=
In diagram (a) the resultant force and the displacement are not in the
same direction,
In the case above the resultant has to be resolved into components
and only the horizontal component will do the work because it is in the
same direction as the resultant
6.1 Work Done by a Constant Force
Example 1 Pulling a Suitcase-on-Wheels
Find the work done if the force is 45.0-N, the angle is 50.0
degrees, and the displacement is 75.0 m.

Example 3 Accelerating a Crate
The truck is accelerating at
a rate of +1.50 m/s2
. The mass
of the crate is 120-kg and it
does not slip. The magnitude of
the displacement is 65 m.
What is the total work done on
the crate by all of the forces
acting on it?
6.1 Work Done by a Constant Force
The angle between the displacement
and the normal force is 90 degrees.
The angle between the displacement
and the weight is also 90 degrees.

6.3 Gravitational Potential Energy
( )fo hhmgW −=gravity
Initial position and the final position
Note that the work that is done by
Force of gravity only depends on two
things
Do example 7 chapter 6 on the prescribed textbook
fo mghmghW −=gravity
The gravitational potential energy PE is the
energy that an object of mass m has by virtue of
its position relative to the surface of the earth.
That position is measured by the height
h of the object relative to an arbitrary zero level
DEFINITION OF GRAVITATIONAL POTENTIAL ENERGY
mgh=PE
6.4 Conservative Versus Nonconservative Forces
Version 2 A force is conservative when it does no work
on an object moving around a closed path, starting and
finishing at the same point.
DEFINITION OF A CONSERVATIVE FORCE
Version 1 A force is conservative when the work it does on a
moving object is independent of the path between
the object’s initial and final positions.
6.4 Conservative Versus Nonconservative Forces
Version 1 A force is conservative when the work it does
on a moving object is independent of the path between the
object’s initial and final positions.

6.4 Conservative Versus Nonconservative Forces
Version 2 A force is conservative when it does no work
on an object moving around a closed path, starting and
finishing at the same point.
fo hh = ( ) 0gravity =−= fo hhmgW
6.4 Conservative Versus Nonconservative Forces
An example of a nonconservative force is the kinetic
frictional force.
( ) sfsfsFW kk −=== 
180coscosθ
The work done by the kinetic frictional force is always negative.
Thus, it is impossible for the work it does on an object that
moves around a closed path to be zero.
The concept of potential energy is not defined for a
nonconservative force.
6.4 Conservative Versus Nonconservative Forces
In normal situations both conservative and nonconservative
forces act simultaneously on an object, so the work done by
the net external force can be written as

of EE −=ncW
If the net work on an object by nonconservative forces
is zero, then its energy does not change:

THE PRINCIPLE OF CONSERVATION OF MECHANICAL ENERGY
The total mechanical energy (E = KE + PE) of an object
remains constant as the object moves, provided that the net
work done by external nononservative forces is zero.
6.5 The Conservation of Mechanical Energy
Example 8 A Daredevil Motorcyclist
A motorcyclist is trying to leap across the canyon by driving
horizontally off a cliff 38.0 m/s. Ignoring air resistance, find
the speed with which the cycle strikes the ground on the other
side.

6.5 The Conservation of Mechanical Energy
Conceptual Example 9 The Favorite Swimming Hole
The person starts from rest, with the rope
held in the horizontal position,
swings downward, and then lets
go of the rope. Three forces
act on him: his weight, the
tension in the rope, and the
force of air resistance.
Can the principle of
conservation of energy
be used to calculate his
final speed?
6.6 Nonconservative Forces and the Work-Energy Theorem
Example 11 Fireworks
Assuming that the nonconservative force
generated by the burning propellant does
425 J of work, what is the final speed
of the rocket. Ignore air resistance.

Questions
The figure shows a 0.41 kg block sliding from A to B
along a frictionless surface. When the block reaches
B, it continues to slide along the horizontal surface
BC where kinetic frictional force acts. As a result,
the block slows down coming to rest at C. The
kinetic energy of the block at A is 37 J and the
heights of A and B are 12.0 m and 7.0 m above the
ground respectively.
•What is the kinetic energy of the block when
reaches B?
•How much work does the kinetic frictional force do
during the BC segment of the trip?

Work and Energy

  • 2. 6.1 Work Done by a Constant Force ( )Jjoule1mN1 =⋅ If the object moves, hence work was done only if the resultant force causes and object to move in the same direction as the resultant force In order to change the state of motion, force has to be applied-Newton’s first law of motion
  • 3. 6.1 Work Done by a Constant Force ( )sFW θcos= In diagram (a) the resultant force and the displacement are not in the same direction, In the case above the resultant has to be resolved into components and only the horizontal component will do the work because it is in the same direction as the resultant
  • 4. 6.1 Work Done by a Constant Force Example 1 Pulling a Suitcase-on-Wheels Find the work done if the force is 45.0-N, the angle is 50.0 degrees, and the displacement is 75.0 m. ( ) ( )[ ]( ) J2170 m0.750.50cosN0.45cos = ==  sFW θ
  • 5. 6.1 Work Done by a Constant Force ( ) FssFW == 0cos ( ) FssFW −== 180cos
  • 6. 6.1 Work Done by a Constant Force Example 3 Accelerating a Crate The truck is accelerating at a rate of +1.50 m/s2 . The mass of the crate is 120-kg and it does not slip. The magnitude of the displacement is 65 m. What is the total work done on the crate by all of the forces acting on it?
  • 7. 6.1 Work Done by a Constant Force The angle between the displacement and the normal force is 90 degrees. The angle between the displacement and the weight is also 90 degrees. ( ) 090cos == sFW
  • 8. 6.1 Work Done by a Constant Force The angle between the displacement and the friction force is 0 degrees. ( )[ ]( ) J102.1m650cosN180 4 ×==W ( )( ) N180sm5.1kg120 2 === mafs If it does not slip, hence the resultant is equal the frictional force
  • 9. 6.2 The Work-Energy Theorem and Kinetic Energy Consider a constant net external force acting on an object. The work is simply s∑F ( ) ( )smasFW == ∑ ( ) ( ) 2 2 12 2 122 2 1 ofof mvmvvvmaxmW −=−== The object is displaced a distance s, in the same direction as the net force ( )axvv of 222 += ( ) ( )22 2 1 of vvax −= If the kinetic energy KE of and object with mass m and speed v is given by 2 2 1 KE mv=
  • 10. 6.2 The Work-Energy Theorem and Kinetic Energy When a net external force does work on and object, the kinetic energy of the object changes according to 2 2 12 f2 1 of KEKE omvmvW −=−= THE WORK-ENERGY THEOREM
  • 11. 6.2 The Work-Energy Theorem and Kinetic Energy In this case the net force is kfmgF −=∑  25sin The work will be given by sfmgsFW k )25sin()( −== ∑  Or simply: 2 2 12 f2 1 of KEKE omvmvW −=−=
  • 12. 6.3 Gravitational Potential Energy ( )sFW θcos= ( )fo hhmgW −=gravity
  • 13. 6.3 Gravitational Potential Energy ( )fo hhmgW −=gravity Initial position and the final position Note that the work that is done by Force of gravity only depends on two things Do example 7 chapter 6 on the prescribed textbook fo mghmghW −=gravity The gravitational potential energy PE is the energy that an object of mass m has by virtue of its position relative to the surface of the earth. That position is measured by the height h of the object relative to an arbitrary zero level DEFINITION OF GRAVITATIONAL POTENTIAL ENERGY mgh=PE
  • 14. 6.4 Conservative Versus Nonconservative Forces Version 2 A force is conservative when it does no work on an object moving around a closed path, starting and finishing at the same point. DEFINITION OF A CONSERVATIVE FORCE Version 1 A force is conservative when the work it does on a moving object is independent of the path between the object’s initial and final positions.
  • 15. 6.4 Conservative Versus Nonconservative Forces Version 1 A force is conservative when the work it does on a moving object is independent of the path between the object’s initial and final positions. ( )fo hhmgW −=gravity
  • 16. 6.4 Conservative Versus Nonconservative Forces Version 2 A force is conservative when it does no work on an object moving around a closed path, starting and finishing at the same point. fo hh = ( ) 0gravity =−= fo hhmgW
  • 17. 6.4 Conservative Versus Nonconservative Forces An example of a nonconservative force is the kinetic frictional force. ( ) sfsfsFW kk −===  180coscosθ The work done by the kinetic frictional force is always negative. Thus, it is impossible for the work it does on an object that moves around a closed path to be zero. The concept of potential energy is not defined for a nonconservative force.
  • 18. 6.4 Conservative Versus Nonconservative Forces In normal situations both conservative and nonconservative forces act simultaneously on an object, so the work done by the net external force can be written as ncc WWW += KEKEKE of ∆=−=W PE)PE-PE( ofgravity ∆−=−=−== foc mghmghWW ncc WWW += ncW+∆−=∆ PEKE
  • 19. 6.5 The Conservation of Mechanical Energy ( ) ( )ofof PEPEKEKEPEKE −+−=∆+∆=ncW ( ) ( )ooff PEKEPEKE +−+=ncW of EE −=ncW If the net work on an object by nonconservative forces is zero, then its energy does not change: of EE = THE PRINCIPLE OF CONSERVATION OF MECHANICAL ENERGY The total mechanical energy (E = KE + PE) of an object remains constant as the object moves, provided that the net work done by external nononservative forces is zero.
  • 20. 6.5 The Conservation of Mechanical Energy Example 8 A Daredevil Motorcyclist A motorcyclist is trying to leap across the canyon by driving horizontally off a cliff 38.0 m/s. Ignoring air resistance, find the speed with which the cycle strikes the ground on the other side.

  • 23. 6.5 The Conservation of Mechanical Energy Conceptual Example 9 The Favorite Swimming Hole The person starts from rest, with the rope held in the horizontal position, swings downward, and then lets go of the rope. Three forces act on him: his weight, the tension in the rope, and the force of air resistance. Can the principle of conservation of energy be used to calculate his final speed?
  • 24. 6.6 Nonconservative Forces and the Work-Energy Theorem Example 11 Fireworks Assuming that the nonconservative force generated by the burning propellant does 425 J of work, what is the final speed of the rocket. Ignore air resistance. THE WORK-ENERGY THEOREM of EE −=ncW

  • 27. Questions The figure shows a 0.41 kg block sliding from A to B along a frictionless surface. When the block reaches B, it continues to slide along the horizontal surface BC where kinetic frictional force acts. As a result, the block slows down coming to rest at C. The kinetic energy of the block at A is 37 J and the heights of A and B are 12.0 m and 7.0 m above the ground respectively. •What is the kinetic energy of the block when reaches B? •How much work does the kinetic frictional force do during the BC segment of the trip?
