5. PREFACE!
Maharashtra was formed on 1 May 1960 by
splitting the bilingual Bombay State, which had
existed since 1956, into majority Marathi-
speaking Maharashtra and Gujarati-speaking
Gujarat, respectively. The state capital is
Mumbai, the most populous urban area in India
9. DANCE
The Powada is a genre of Marathi
poetry that emerged during the
late 17th century in India. The
powadas are a kind of ballad
written in an exciting style and
narrate historical events in an
inspiring way. The composer-
cum-singers of the powadas are
known as Shahirs. Earlier,
powadas were mostly composed
by the eyewitnesses of the great
events celebrated in those
ballads.
Lavani is a genre of music
popular in Maharashtra, India.
Lavani is a combination of
traditional song and dance, which
particularly performed to the
beats of Dholki, a percussion
instrument. Lavani is noted for its
powerful rhythm. Lavani has
contributed substantially to the
development of Marathi folk
theatre. In Maharashtra and
southern Madhya Pradesh, it is
performed by the female
performers wearing nine-yard
Koli is the dance form of Koli
fisher folk of Maharashtra. The
community has its own distinct
identity and lively dances. The
dance incorporates elements that
this community is most familiar
with - sea and fishing. The dance
is performed by both men and
women divided into two groups,
where fishermen stand in two
rows holding oars in their hands.

Abhang
Abhang or abhanga is a form of devotional poetry
sung in praise of the Hindu god Vitthal, also
known as Vithoba. The word "abhang" comes
from a for "non-" and bhang for "ending" or
"interrupting", in other words, a flawless,
continuous process, in this case referring to a
poem. By contrast, the devotional songs known
as Bhajans focus on the inward journey.
Gondhal
The story goes that the dance form known as the ‘gondhal’
was created when the warrior-sage Parashuram, having
killed and beheaded the demon Betasur, sewed the sinews
of its head into its crown and fashioned a musical
instrument out of it. Playing this macabre instrument,
Parashuram danced to thunderous, alarming rhythms, in
praise of his mother, the Goddess RenukaParashuram’s
dance was called the gondhal.
12. Gudhi padwa
Gudhi Padwa is a spring-time festival
that marks the traditional new year
for Marathi and Konkani Hindus.It is
celebrated in and near Maharashtra
and Goa on the first day of the
Chaitra month to mark the beginning
of the New year according to the
lunisolar Hindu calendar. The word
पाडवा (pāḍavā) or पाडवो (pāḍavo) or
पाड्ड्वा/पाड्ड्वो (pāḍḍvā/pāḍḍvo) comes
from the Sanskrit word प्रतिपदा
(pratipadā), which refers to the first
day of a lunar fortnight.
13. Banganga festival
Banganga festival is a two-day music festival celebrated
annually in the month of January in Malabar Hills, Mumbai,
conducted jointly by MTDC ((Maharashtra Tourism
Development Corporation) and Indian Heritage Society
Mumbai, to protect the cultural heritage of the country. The
festival owes its name to the Banganga tank, a holy tank
located in the complex of Walkeshwar temple in Malabar
hills.
Kojagiri Purnima
Sharad Purnima or Kojagiri Purnima, Navanna Purnima,or
Kaumudi Purnima is a harvest festival celebrated on the
full moon day of the Hindu lunar month of Ashvin marking
the end of the monsoon season. On this auspicious day,
many divine pairs like Shiva Parvati, Radhakrishna and
Lakshmi Narayan are worshipped along with the moon and
are offered flowers and kheer . Deities in temples are
usually dressed in white color signifying the brightness of
moon. Many people observe full day fasting on this
day.This day is celebrated differently in different parts of
the country. In Odisha, on this day unmarried women keep
fast with the popular belief of getting their suitable
groom(kumara).
15. Maharashtra is the wealthiest state in India,
contributing 15% of the country's industrial
output and 13.3% of its GDP. Maharashtra
encompasses an area of 30.77 million
hectare and as per the 2001 census, it has a
population of 112.3 million. More than 60%
of the people of Maharashtra are employed
in agriculture and allied activities. Food
crops include mangoes, grapes, bananas,
oranges, wheat, rice, jowar, bajra, and
pulses. Cash crops include groundnut,
cotton, sugarcane, turmeric, and tobacco.
The net irrigated area totals 33,500
hectares. Table 1 illustrates the current
area, productivity and production statistics of
major crops in Maharashtra. Maharashtra is
major producer of Jowar and Arhar
contributing 46.09 and 29.11 %, respectively
to the total production of India. It is second
largest producer of Cotton (22.21%),
Soybean (28.14%), and total cereals
(13.56%) in the country.

17. HISTORYCAL MONUMENTS
Shaniwarwada is a
historical fortification in the
city of Pune in Maharashtra,
India. Built in 1732,it was
the seat of the Peshwas of
the Maratha Empire until
1818, when the Peshwas
lost control to the British
East India Company after
the Third Anglo-Maratha
War. Following the rise of
the Maratha Empire, the
palace became the center of
Indian politics in the 18th
century. The Shaniwarwada
was originally the seven-
storey capital building of
The Aga Khan Palace was
built by Sultan Muhammed
Shah Aga Khan III in Pune,
India. The palace was an act
of charity by the spiritual
leader of the Nizari Ismaili
Muslims, who wanted to
help the poor in the
neighbouring areas of
Pune, who were drastically
hit by famine.The palace is
closely linked to the Indian
freedom movement as it
served as a prison for
Mahatma Gandhi, his wife
Kasturba Gandhi, his
secretary Mahadev Desai
and Sarojini Naidu.
Shinde Chatri located in
Wanwadi, a well known
place in Pune, India, is a
memorial dedicated to the
18th century military leader
Mahadji Shinde who served
as the commander-in-chief
of the Maratha army under
the Peshwas from 1760 to
1780. It is one of the most
significant landmarks in the
city and is reminiscent of
the Maratha rule. It is a hall
that marks the spot of
Mahadji Shinde's cremation
on 12 February 1794.

20. Shirdi
Shirdi is a town in the state of
Maharashtra, in western India.
It's known as the former home
of revered spiritual leader Sai
Baba, and as a major
pilgrimage site. Devotees
gather daily at the Sai Baba
Temple complex to honor his
legacy. Here, the Samadhi
Mandir shrine has an ornate
marble statue of Sai Baba,
alongside his tomb. Close by
are Dwarkamai, a mosque
where Sai Baba once lived, and
tree-lined Lendi Garden.
Panchgani
Panchgani is a hill station
southeast of Mumbai in India’s
Maharashtra state. It’s known for
the Table Land, a huge volcanic
plateau. Lookouts like Sydney
Point and Parsi Point offer views
of Dhom Dam lake and Kamalgad
Fort, used as a prison by the
British in the early 19th century.
To the southeast, the Rajpuri
Caves are surrounded by sacred
ponds and contain a temple
dedicated to the Hindu god Lord
Kartikeya.

Bhandardara is a holiday resort village near Igatpuri, in the western ghats
of India. The village is located in the Akole tehsil, Ahmednagar district of
the state of Maharashtra, about 185 kilometers (115 mi) from Mumbai and
155 kilometers (96 mi) from Ahmednagar.Bhandardara sits by the Pravara
River, and the natural environment, waterfalls, mountains, Wilson dam,
Arthur lake and Randha falls are tourist attractions.

Tarkarli is a village in Malvan taluka in Sindhudurg district in the Indian
state of Maharashtra.It is a beach destination and remote place in southern
Maharashtra. Few years ago, Tarkarli beach is declared as a Queen Beach
of Konkan region. Monthly, Thousands of tourists are visiting this place to
rejuvenate and enjoy thrill of water sports activities

Anjaneri
Anjaneri, one of the forts in the mountain range of Nasik-
Trimbakeshwar, is considered to be the birthplace of god
Hanuman. Anjaneri is located 20 km away from Nasik by
Trimbak Road. It has become a famous trekking spot for
local Nashikites, specially in the rainy season.Anjaneri is an
attraction of Nasik city, which is also an important fort in the
Trimbakeshwar region.
Pratapgad
Pratapgad literally 'Valour Fort' is a large fort located in
Satara district, in the Western Indian state of Maharashtra.
Significant as the site of the Battle of Pratapgad, the fort is
now a popular tourist destination.The Maratha king Shivaji
commissioned Moropant Trimbak Pingle, his prime
minister, to undertake the construction of this fort in order to
defend the banks of the Nira and the Koyna rivers, and to
defend the Par pass.
Kalsubai
Kalsubai is a mountain in the Western Ghats, located in the
Indian state of Maharashtra. Its summit, situated at an
elevation of 1,646 metres (5,400 ft), is the highest point in
Maharashtra.The mountain range lies within the Kalsubai
Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary. It is visited
throughout the year by avid trekkers, Kalsubai temple
devotees and wildlife enthusiasts alike.

Vashishti river
River Vashishti is one of the larger rivers in the Konkan coast
of Maharashtra, India. The river begins in the Western Ghats
and snakes its way westwards towards the Arabian Sea.
Kolkewadi Dam near Alore has a vast reservoir, which feeds a
tributary of the river.The town of Chiplun lies on its banks.
During the 2005 Maharashtra floods, the river swelled its
banks, causing many of the city's residents to evacuate it.
Wardha river
The Wardha River (Varada River) is a major river in Vidarbha
region of Maharastra in India. The Wardha River joins the
Wainganga River at Chaprala in Gadchiroli district and forms
the Pranahita River which ultimately flows into
Godavari.Wardha river originates at an altitude of 777 meters
Satpura Range near Khairwani village in Multai tehsil, Betul
District, Madhya Pradesh.
Tapti river
The Tapti River is a river in central India between the
Godavari and Narmada rivers which flows westwards before
draining into the Arabian Sea. The river has a length of 724
km. Its origin is near Multai Reserve forest in MP. From there
it enters Maharashtra and flows through western part of
Vidarbha and Khandesh. From Maharashtra it flows into
Gujarat, where its mouth is near Surat

Solkadhi is a type of drink, an
appetizer originating from the
Indian subcontinent, usually
eaten with rice or sometimes
drunk after or along with the
meals. Popular in Goa and the
Maharashtra's coastal region, it
is made from coconut milk and
kokum, also known as Aamsol
or Aamsul.

Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. It is
a sweetened condensed milk
made by boiling milk on low

Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary was
created in the Ambegaon and Khed
talukas of Pune District, in the Western
Indian state of Maharashtra in order
mainly to protect the habitat of the Indian
Giant Squirrel.

Santury
Anerdam Wildlife Santury is situated on southwestern range of
Satpura range in Shirpur Tehsil of Dhule District.It shares
boundaries with Yawal sanctuary other sanctuaries in Madhya
Pradesh.The sanctuary was once very rich in wildlife, now it is
trying to regain its previous status.Best time to visit the
sanctuary is November to February.

Maharashtra takes pride in Malvan Marine Sanctuary;
biologically, one of the richest coastal regions in India,
which was brought on the world map in 1987. It's crystal
clear water is home to the extremely rich coastal species
that are unique to the region like sea anemones,
mollusks, polychaetes, pearl oyster, corals, seaweed,
and mangroves.

MAHARASHTRA
Maharashtra is one of the warmest region in
India with an average daily high temperature
of 33 degrees centigrade. With a yearly
average of 33 degrees the climate is very
warm, but has only a very few tropical and
humid months. It is warm to hot all year
round and invites to bathe at average water
temperatures of 28 degrees. Dued to the
lesser rain the best time for traveling is from
October to May. Sometimes humidity ist
unpleasantly high in August. The most rain
days occur from from June to September.
