• There are three different categories of “I”
Listening:
– Personal referencing
– Personal curiosity
– Personal certainty
4. “I” Listening
• Personal referencing
– Our minds shift from listening to understand
another, to considering what is being said with
reference to our own experiences
– “Me too.”
– “One time, I…”
5. “I” Listening
• Personal curiosity
– When we are interested in what the other
person is saying, not to understand his or her
needs, but because we want more information
for ourselves
– “Tell me more about that website with pre-
made thematic units…”
6. “I” Listening
• Personal certainty
– When we are sure we know the solution to the
problem, sometimes before we’ve listened
enough to understand the problem
– “Have you tried…”
– “I’ll bet you need to…”
7. “I” Listening
• Find a partner from your table
• One partner must be facing the screen
• One partner must have their back to the
screen
• The partner with their back to the screen will
tell their partner about their plans for the
summer
• The partner facing the screen must interject as
indicated by the screen
11. “I” Listening
• Switch places with your partner
• Once again, the partner with their back to the
screen will tell their partner about their plans
for the summer
• The partner facing the screen must interject as
indicated by the screen
