2. Bromeliads Bromeliads are in the pineapple family. Their thick, waxy leaves form a round bowl like shape in the centre for catching the rain. Some bromeliads can hold 26 litres of water in big bromeliads. Bromeliads are mini ecosystems in the small round bowl providing shelter for several creatures including frogs ,tadpoles, salamanders, snails, beetles and mosquito larvae. Those that die decompose and furnish the plant with nutrients. One bromeliad was found to contain several miniature beetles, crane flies, earwigs, a frog, a cockroach, spiders, fly larvae, a millipede, a scorpion, woodlice and an earthworms. http://www.srl.caltech.edu/personnel/krubal/rainforest/Edit560s6/www/plants/bromeliads.html
3. Venus Fly Trap Some plants are attached to take nutrients from animal droppings. The best known carnivorous plant would be the Venus fly trap, but more vicousis the pitcher plant Nepenthes rafflesia, found in southeast Asia. This plant grows to 30 feet tall and may have pitchers 12 inches in length, usually crammed full of digested insects.Pitcher plants also eat small mammals and reptiles that attempt to steal the insects from the pitcher. http://www.srl.caltech.edu/personnel/krubal/rainforest/Edit560s6/www/plants/carniverous.html
4. Liana Nearly 90% of the worlds vines come from the rainforest. Lianas are a type of vine that climb up trees. They cling on to two trees and then are used by monkeys and different animals to swing on. They grow in different sizes normally up to 914 metres and are irregular shapes. They grow by climbing up trees then staying in a place with lots of sun. These type of vines grow close to young saplings. http://www.srl.caltech.edu/personnel/krubal/rainforest/Edit560s6/www/plants/lianas.html
5. Orchids Orchids comprise one of the most lush and varied of flowering plant families. There are a lot of species and orchids are especially common in moist warm places. Even though temperate orchids usually grow in the soil.Tropicalorchids are more often epiphytes which grow non-parasitically on trees. The colours of orchids are normally purple and have different types of petals. Orchids normally grow at a reasonable speed that is how they get nice colours. Orchids have a bit of white but mostly have just purple with some patterns on the petals. http://www.srl.caltech.edu/personnel/krubal/rainforest/Edit560s6/www/plants/orchids.html
6. Strangler figs are mostly a part of the fig family. In Spain they call it the mastapalo which means “killer tree". The life of a strangler fig starts as a epiphytes then drops down onto the forest floor and starts growing, borne by birds and monkeys which eat the fig fruit. The sapling of the strangler fig finds the closest host tree to climb up and hang on. When the strangler fig is growing it gets tighter and tighter and eventually suffocates the host tree : when the host tree dies the strangler fig leaves the host tree hollow standing up right.By using an adult tree as its host, the strangler fig avoids competition for light and nutrients at ground level. http://www.srl.caltech.edu/personnel/krubal/rainforest/Edit560s6/www/plants/strangler.html
