THE WAR OF THE WORLD
by
H. G. WELLS
Condensation by Anggi Febi Jayanti (1523102)
H. G. Wells was born in England in 1866. After a number of unsuccessful
years working in a shop, he left work to study biology in 1883. He later became a
teacher, but he was not suited to this work either and so decided to become a full-
time writer in 1893.
His first novel, The Time Machine, was published in 1895. In it, Wells
criticizes British society and warns that human progress is not inevitable. His next
novels, The Island of Dr Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), and The War
of the Worlds (1898) all question the relationship between man and science and
are regarded as science-fiction classics.
Wells used his position as a well known and popular author to try to
change society for the better. After World War I (1914-18) Wells became
increasingly involved in politics at an international level. He worked for the
League of Nation - an organization whose main objective was to prevent another
war on the scale of World War I. He met with important leaders, including Lenin,
and worked in the Labour party in Britain. His high-profile political career
continued through the next decades until his death in 1946. Wells lived through
World War II in his house in central London, refusing to let the war force him
from his home.
SUMMARY
PLOT:
1. Exposition
The war of the worlds is one of the most important science-fiction
classics of all the time. It tells the story of martians arriving on earth with
plan to destroy human life and make the planet their own. The story is
reported directly by a survivor of the martian war - a writer, whose name
we never learn.
2. 2
The book starts with the narrator mentioning that the people of
Earth never expected Martians to attack. One summer night, at the end of
the nineteenth century, a strange cylinder falls to earth near the english
town of working. Then Martian cylinders come crashing down into the
English countryside. Few people are interested at first, but then the end of
the cylinder unsrews and a strange, grey creature - a martian - emerges.
The cylinders open, revealing Martians that don't move so well – that is,
until they build their tank-like tripods and go striding around the
countryside on those, burning everything in sight with their Heat-Rays.

destroying towns and lives as they go. As the machines start moving
towards london and the news spreads, the population panics. Within days
there are six million refugees fighting to escape London. Thousands of
people are being killed every day and the Martians are only becoming

Meanwhile, the narrator's brother is in London, so we get to hear
all about how things went over there too. At first, people in London
worried about the Martians because they didn't realize how powerful the
Martians were. Then, later, the Londoners hear that the Martians are
advancing on the city, so they all evacuates. On his way out, the brother
meets up with two women, Mrs. and Miss Elphinstone, and the three of
them escape together. They reach the coast and get a spot on a boat that's
going to Ostend. While their boat is shipping out, the Martians attack, but
the English navy destroys two of the Martians' tripods.
3. 3
The narrator and the curate are trapped in a house for a few days
because there are Martians camped outside the house. The two men grow
to hate each other. The narrator observes the Martians and discovers a lot
about them. For example, the Martians survive off of blood (hence, the
delight of going after humans). Eventually, the Martians catch the curate,
who has been knocked out by the narrator.
Several days later, after the Martians leave the general area, the
narrator comes out of his hole in the ground. He discovers that the world is
stranger than he left it – it's largely destroyed and covered in a red Martian
weed.
The narrator runs into the artilleryman, who tells the narrator all
about his plan for a new lifestyle: living underground, playing cricket, and
killing Martians occasionally. The narrator is very impressed by this plan
and wants to subscribe to the artilleryman's newsletter. However, while the
artilleryman talks the talk, he doesn't walk the walk, so the narrator leaves
him. No cricket for them.
5. Falling conflicts : konflik menurun
The writer escapes to Sheen with curate who has lost his mind as a
result of the attacks. As the two men shelter in house for the night, a
martian cylinder falls next to them and they are buried in earth and bricks,
with very little food and the constant threat of being found by the martians,
the two men fight for survival for two weeks. In a very tense and
frightening scen, the writer kills the curate in order to save his own life.
The narrator makes his way to London, which he discovers is a
mess. He eventually discovers that the Martians are all dead – they died
from some bacteria or disease that humans are immune to. He finds his
wife again and thinks about how the Martian invasion has made people
rethink some of the things they thought they knew.
