LESSON 2.1.
COORDINATED
FUNCTIONS OF THE
RESPIRATORY AND
CIRCULATORY
SYSTEMS
OBJECTIVES
•1. Describe blood flow and gas exchange
within the heart, circulatory system, and
lungs
•2. Explain the mechanism of how the
respiratory and circulatory systems work
together
REVIEWING PREVIOUS LESSON
• Guide Questions:
• 1. What is the gas we
humans breathe in?
• 2. What is the gas we
humans breathe out?
• 3. What is the gas that the
plants take in?
• 4. What is the gas that the
plants take out?
• 2. Explain the cycle in your
own words.
•Suppose you ran in a certain park and you
became exhausted after continuous exercise.
As you stopped, notice that you are
experiencing some bodily changes. You are
experiencing increase in heart/pulse rate and
you breathe faster than usual. What do you
think is the reason why such bodily changes
occur upon engaging with physical activity?
(You may receive an incentive upon
answering this)
• Carries oxygen, nutrients &
waste throughout the body.
• The Circulatory System is
also sometimes called the
Cardiovascular System.
• Cardio - means heart
• Vascular - means vessels
• Blood moves from arteries to
capillaries.
• In the capillaries oxygen &
nutrients move from the blood
to the body’s cells.
• Blood then moves through
veins back to the heart,
carrying carbon dioxide in it.
• The heart is the center
of this system, it
pumps blood through
blood vessels called
arteries.
• The heart is also called
the cardiovascular
muscle.
HOMEWORK
•Draw the model of a
human heart in your
notebook. Label the
parts and state their
functions.
• The circulatory
system also works
with the
respiratory and
digestive systems.
• Respiratory system gives
oxygen & the circulatory
system takes that oxygen to
other cells.
• Digestive system breaks down
nutrients in food & the
circulatory system carries the
nutrients to cells in the body.
CIRCULATION
FLOW OF BLOOD
1. RIGHT ATRIUM (CONTAINS DEOXYGENATED BLOOD
OR CARBON DIOXIDE)
2. TRICUSPID VALVE OPENS LETTING THE
DEOXYGENATED BLOOD MOVE INTO THE RIGHT
VENTRICLE. TRICUSPID VALVE CLOSED TO PREVENT
BACKFLOW OF BLOOD.
3. PULMONARY VALVE OPENS AND RIGHT VENTRICLE
PUSHES THE DEOXYGENATED BLOOD INTO THE
PULMONARY ARTERY. PULMONARY VALVE CLOSED.
4. INSIDE THE LUNGS (AIR SACS), BLOOD RELEASES
CARBON DIOXIDE AND ABSORBS OXYGEN. MAKING
THE BLOOD OXYGENATED. (PULMONARY
CIRCULATION)
FLOW OF BLOOD
3. AFTER PICKING UP OXYGEN, THE BLOOD TRAVELS
BACK THE HEART THROUGH THE PULMONARY VEIN
INTO THE LEFT ATRIUM.
4. MITRAL VALVE/BISCUSPID VALVE OPENS LETTING THE
OXYGENATED BLOOD MOVE INTO THE LEFT VENTRICLE.
MITRAL VALVE CLOSED.
5. AORTIC VALVE OPENS AND LEFT VENTRICLE PUMPS
THE OXYGENATED BLOOD INTO THE AORTA.
6. AORTA CARRIES THE OXYGENATED BLOOD FROM THE
HEART TO ALL THE TISSUES IN THE BODY EXCEPT THE
LUNGS. (SYSTEMIC CIRCULATION)
7.DEOXYGENATED BLOOD RETURNS TO THE HEART
THROUGH THE SUPERIOR AND INFERIOR VENA CAVA.
8. THE CYCLE REPEATS.

HYPERTENSION
ANEMIA
What idea is common in each set
of pictures?
What are the negative lifestyles that
are depicted in the pictures?
How can lifestyle affect the functioning of the
respiratory and circulatory systems?
How can these negative lifestyles be
changed?
Complete the graphic organizer by writing down some
ways to keep your body healthy and away from respiratory
and circulatory diseases.
Guess if the disease is related with
Respiratory System or Circulatory
System.
1. Asthma 6. Heart Failure
2. Hypertension 7. Tuberculosis
3. Coronary Artery Disease 8. Lung Cancer
4. Arteriosclerosis 9. Stroke
5. Chronic bronchitis 10. Emphysema
Put a check mark ( √ ) to a statement that
shows a healthy lifestyle and put an “X” if the
statement shows unhealthy lifestyle.
______ 1. quitting smoking
______ 2. skipping breakfast
______ 3. spending too much time on your mobile phone and computer
______ 4. exercising regularly
______ 5. overeating
______ 6. drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water every day
______ 7. eating a balanced diet
______ 8. going to bed too late
______ 9. keeping an ideal body weight
______ 10. reducing salt and sugar intake
SUMMARY
 Cigarette smoking harms nearly every organ in the body,
causing many illnesses and affecting health in general. The
negative effects of smoking on the circulatory system
increased heart rate and blood pressure, coronary heart
disease, arteriosclerosis, and vascular diseases. The
diseases caused by smoking are chronic bronchitis,
emphysema, asthma, cough, colds, tuberculosis, lung cancer,
and other respiratory infections.
• The best way to prevent diseases in the respiratory and
circulatory systems is to have a healthy lifestyle.
Choose the word that does not
belong to the group.
1. arteriosclerosis: heart failure: emphysema:
hypertension
2. stroke: asthma: cough: bronchitis
3. lung cancer: colds: tuberculosis: vascular disease
4. regular washing of hands: eating nutritious food:
getting enough sleep: smoking
5. drinking alcohol: taking a bath regularly: using
mobile phones for a long time: exercising only when in
the mood
Homework: Conduct a survey among your family members.
Indicate the appropriate characteristics/ Traits that each
possesses.
Characteristics/ Traits Family Member
Father Mother Brother Sister You
Eye color (brown or black)
Shape of ear lobes (attached or
detached)

ACTIVITY 2:
RESPIRATION
AND GAS
EXCHANGE
• 1. The gas that comes from the
alveolus is the oxygen gas.
• 2. The gas that comes from the
alveolus capillary is the carbon
dioxide gas.
• 3. The carbon dioxide gas that
goes in from the capillary to
the alveolus is excreted by
diffusion into the air from the
blood.
• 4. The oxygen gas is absorbed
into the blood from the air.
•1. The gas that comes from the capillary to the
body tissues is the oxygen gas.
•2. The gas that comes from the body tissues to
the capillary is the carbon dioxide gas.
•3. The oxygen gas that comes from the
capillary is absorbed into the blood from the
air .
•4. The oxygen gas that goes in from body
tissues to the capillary is excreted by diffusion
into the air from the blood.
Activity 3:

Editor's Notes

  1. When you were in Grade 8, you have learned that there are cycles of materials took place within the ecosystem and the exchange of these materials occurred between two organisms. One of these is the oxygen-carbon dioxide cycle which involves the cycling of the gases between animals and plants. Based on the given figure below which illustrates the cycle, identify the gases which you think comes in and comes out from humans and animals as well as from plants.
