WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROGRAM? •KEEP STUDENTS ENGAGED IN MATH AND LANGUAGE ARTS CONTENT OVER THE SUMMER •ALLOW STUDENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO PRACTICE SKILLS FROM THIS PREVIOUS SCHOOL YEAR IN PREPARATION OF THE 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR •INCENTIVIZE STUDENTS FOR ENGAGING IN MATH AND LANGUAGE ARTS
- 3. WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH SAY? •ON AVERAGE, STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT SCORES DECLINED OVER SUMMER VACATION BY ONE MONTH’S WORTH OF SCHOOL YEAR LEARNING. •DECLINES ARE HIGHER IN MATH THAN READING. •THE EXTENT OF THE LOSS IS LARGER IN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL THAN IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
- 4. SUMMER READING PROGRAM JUNE 8-JULY 31 (8 WEEKS) Students select 2 books to read Student completes plot structure diagram Students upload their work
- 5. SUMMER READING PROGRAM INCENTIVES Each book with completed diagram • 1 dress down pass OR 1 game room pass 5 books read with completed diagrams • Chick-Fil-A party over the summer at school Two students with the most books read • $100 gift card (1 MS and 1 HS)
- 6. Why Read? Reading books is the only out of school activity for 16 year old students linked to getting a managerial or professional job later in life - University of Oxford Students who do not read over the summer, or read infrequently during the summer see their reading abilities stagnate or decline. Students who participated in a summer reading program gained nearly 1.5 months of reading skills compared to non- participants. -Harvard University Imagine a professional athlete taking two months off and not training in their respective sport. They simply wont be as good when they return to game action as a result of not practicing.
- 7. HOW CAN PARENTS HELP? •ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO READ FOR 20-30 MINUTES PER DAY •PROVIDE INCENTIVES AT HOME FOR READERS •MAKE READING A SOCIAL ACTIVITY

- 9. SUMMER MATH PROGRAM INCENTIVES Each Zoom session attended • 1 dress down pass OR 1 game room pass Each math packet completed and submitted • Ice cream party over the summer at school Perfect attendance for Zoom sessions and all math packet completed • $100 gift card (1 MS and 1 HS)
- 10. HOW PARENTS CAN HELP? •ENSURE YOUR STUDENT IS PREPARED WITH THE NECESSARY MATERIALS AND ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY •SIT WITH YOUR STUDENT EACH WEEK TO REVIEW THE MATH TOPIC FOR THAT GIVEN WEEK •WORK TOGETHER •INCENTIVIZE AT HOME
Editor's Notes
- Students in middle school and high school will be provided with a list of books that they may read over the summer. These books can be found in print, as well as as online by visiting HAAl pass. Students are asked to pick at least 2 of the listed books for their grade level to read. When students finish reading a book, they will complete a plot structure diagram to provide the literary elements that take place in the book. This will help students dig deeper, while allowing us to have evidence that learning is taking place. Students will be able to upload their work each time they complete a book using the summer program folder on the slam tampa website. June 8-July 31 (8 weeks)
- Each book read with a completed plot diagram= 1 dress down pass or 1 game room pass 5 books read with a completed plot diagram= summer chick fil a party at school (Covid guidelines in order) Two students with Most books read= $100 gift card (1 middle school + 1 high school)

- Students in middle school and high school (6th grade-Geometry) will be provided with weekly math worksheets over the summer. These worksheets are designed to help students review content in order to be prepared for the 2020-20201 school year. Weekly zoom sessions will be available for students to get live help with any of their work. A schedule of zoom sessions will be provided prior to June 8th . Students will be able to upload their work each time they complete math work for the week using the summer program folder on the slam tampa website. June 8-July 31 (8 weeks)
- Each zoom session attended= 1 dress down pass or 1 game room pass Entire Entire Math packet completed weekly and submitted online= Ice cream party at school (covid guidelines in place) Perfect attendance for zoom sessions + math packet completed in full= entered to win $100 gift card (1 for middle school and 1 for high school)
