3. Introduction
4G is the fourth generation of mobile phone communication technology
standards.
It is a successor to the third generation (3G) standards.
A 4G system provides mobile “Ultra Broadband Speed” – to be counted in
gigabytes per second.
This technology is currently available in some countries but it is still being
perfected.
4. 1G
• Refers to the first-generation of wireless telephone technology, mobile
telecommunications.
• These are the analog telecommunications standards that were introduced in the 1980s.
• The radio signals that 1G networks use are analog.
Defects :
• Poor voice quality.
• No security.
• Frequent call drops.
• Poor battery life.
• Large phone size.
5. 2G
• Is based on GSM or in other words global system for mobile communication.
• Was launched in Finland in the year 1991.
• 2G networks use digital signals.
• Enabled services such as SMS, MMS, GPRS, EDGE, Voice Mail.
Defects :
• GSM doesn’t support high data rates.
• Inefficient usage of bandwidth & resources.
• Unable to handle complex data.
• Reduced range of sound.
• Weaker digital signals.
6. 3G
• The 3G technology adds multimedia facilities to 2G phones by allowing video ,
audio & graphics applications.
• The idea behind 3G is to have a single network standard instead.
• 3G promises increased bandwidth, up to 384 Kbps when the device holder is
walking, 128 Kbps in car & 2 Mbps in fixed applications.
Defects :
• Expensive fees for 3G licenses services.
• It was challenge to build the infrastructure for 3G.
• High bandwidth requirement.
• Expensive 3G phones.
7. Where do we want to go?
High transfer rate.
Internet access any where
Ability to move around with the same IP
address.
Utilization of Smart antennas.
High resolution Mobile Tv.
8. 4G
• Characterized by high-speed data rates.
• In 4G, the download speed is up to 100 Mbps for moving users & 1 Gbps for
stationary users.
• Will allow users to download a full-length film within five minutes.
• Will also be able to stream high-definition
television & radio to hand-held devices.
• IP ( Internet Protocol) based mobile system.
• Multi-standard wireless system.
• OFDM used instead of CDMA.
9. Why 4G is Better than 3G?
Technology 3G 4G
Data Transfer Rate 3.1 Mbps 100 Mbps
Internet Services Broadband Ultra Broadband
Mobile – Tv Resolution Low High
Bandwidth 5-20 MHz 100 MHz
Frequency 1.6-2 GHz 2-8 GHz
Download & Upload 5.8 Mbps 14Mbps
10. Telecom companies developing 4G

11. Application of 4G
• Better usage of Multimedia applications.
• 4G system gives mobile users a “Virtual Presence”
. Example: Video Conferencing.
• Graphical Maps of streets, buildings & physical
characteristics of a large metropolis.
• Used for Life-Saving .Example: Telemedicine.
• Traffic control during disasters.
• Sensors in public vehicle.
• Cameras in traffic light.
12. Advantages of 4G
• It is very fast & 10 times faster than 3G network.
• It has higher bandwidth.
• Extremely high voice quality.
• Very fast when downloading huge files.
• When streaming videos, watching online videos,
playing online games & others streaming stuffs, is
very clear & bright.
• Easily access internet, social networks, video calling
etc.
• It is stable when connected to the internet without
any disruption.
13. Disadvantages of 4G
• It has higher data prices for consumers.
• Consumers are forced to by a new device to support
4G LTE.
• It consumes a lot of battery when in use.
• It consumes data very fast when in use.
• Device’s battery become hot when in use for long
time.
• It has different network bands for different phones.
14. Which countries have 4G?
Singapore
South Korea
Hungary
Romania
USA
Germany
Spain
Argentina
Brazil
Australia
Japan
Bangladesh & many more.
15. 4G in Bangladesh
• 4G launched in Bangladesh on 19 February, 2018.
• Mobile operators launched 4G services in Dhaka,
Chittagong, Khulna & Sylhet after getting licenses from
BTRC.
• Banglalink took 10.6 MHz spectrum with a price of Tk. 2558
core.
• Grameenphone took 5 MHz with a price of Tk. 1284 core.
• Robi did not buy any spectrum as it & Airtel have merged
into one operator.
• Teletalk has already enough spectrum to launch the 4G
services.
• The Government earned Tk. 5268 core in revenue.
17. Conclusion
• 4G can be described in one word “MAGIC” which stands for:
Mobile Multimedia
Anytime Anywhere
Global mobility support,
Integrated wireless & personalized services.
“We have the global scale, but not everyone has 4G in the world”
