This document discusses how adults approach second language learning through acquisition and learning. It finds that adults acquire a second language naturally through interaction, while also learning it formally by studying structures and forms. A survey of participants found that most agree they use their first language when learning a second language, but performance on grammatical sentences was only correctly answered 30% of the time, with most answers showing transfer from the first language or being incorrect. The conclusion is that ignoring an adult learner's first language in the classroom teaches less efficiently.
