2. Use of the past simple
a) For past actions, they indicate the period of time during
which a completed action was developed and completed,
It is usual that it is accompanied by a time adverb: I
bought this car last year.
b) to express an indeterminate action in the past: they
used pencils and paper.
c) to express a habitual action in the past: they never
drank alcohol.
3. Features
1-Indicates an action that was performed at a specific
time in the past
2- Its essential characteristic is that the main verb of the
sentence is always in the past tense
3-It is the only grammatical tense that uses verbs in the
past
4- It is composed of simple elements, therefore only the
following formula is used in its composition: S + V2 + C
Where, S is equal to the subject of the sentence; V2 is the
verb of the sentence conjugated in the past tense and C is
the complement of the sentence.
5- In the complement can be used, optionally, expressions
that determine time, although the verb is the one that will
determine if the sentence is in the past or not.
4. Regular verbs
They are the ones that generally form the past and the
past participle by adding the ending 'ed’
If the infinitive of the verb ends in 'e', a 'd' is added:
Examples: absolve / absolved
If the infinitive of the verb ends in 'y' preceded by a
consonant, change the 'y' to 'i' and add 'ed’
Examples: study / studied
If the infinitive of the verb is formed by a single syllable
with the form 'vowel-consonant-vowel', the consonant is
doubled and 'ed' is added
Examples: plan / planned
5. Irregular verbs
-They are the ones that form the past and past participle
irregularly
-For the present they behave like regular verbs, adding-'S
'to the third person singular (except' to be 'and' to have ‘)
-Irregular verbs (as their name suggests) do not follow
any rule to form the past, so they must be learned by
"memorizing" or by practicing their use through specific
exercises, and of course through daily English practice.
since its use is very common.
Examples:
1.- My mom has always said that the beach is the best
place on Earth.
2.- The florist has cut a lot of flowers to decorate the
church.
6. Affirmative sentences in the past simple
They are recognized because the main verb of the
sentence is paused, and because it also meets the
following formula: S + V2 + C
Examples:
1.- The girl went to the cinema yesterday
S V2 C
Where: The girl, (She) is the subject; went is the past tense
of the verb Go, and to the cinema everyday, is the
complement
Note that the verb in the past tense is not added "s" or
"es" when it is conjugated with the third. Singular person,
since this rule is for the exclusive use of the present simple
7. Negative sentences in the past simple
They are recognized by the use of "didn't" between the
subject and the main verb of the sentence, taking into
account that:
Didn't: Used with all personal pronouns
Examples:
1.- Josue lived in Patanemo. changes to: Josue didn't live in
Patanemo
2.- We studied in U.C changes to: We didn't study in U.C
Note that when we use "didn't" the main verb, which was
in the past, is changed to present conjugated in its natural
form without the preposition TO.
