Project scope
• Assign stratigraphy where possible,
while resolving and extrapolating the
“accepted” Kalgoorlie stratigraphy.
• Integrate magmatic history of mafic
and felsic volcanics; granites, mafic
intrusions and successions.
• Collect new data (geochron &
geochem) and revise mapping
where necessary.

Why??
• Limited by 2D view.
– Aim is to harmonize our understanding of the geology in the Eastern
Goldfields by producing an “integrated bedrock geological platform”
(IGB) to accommodate 3D and 4D geology!
• Lack of consensus on a stratigraphic/ terrane model.
– Build the “essential framework” for a 3D and 4D geological interpretation
to better understand the tectonic setting.
• Invigorate Greenfields exploration.
– 3D and 4D framework for mineralisation modelling.

Yilgarn Craton
• Yilgarn Craton is subdivide into 4 Terranes,
after Cassidy et al. (2006), where:
– The Youanmi Terrane (3.4 - 2.62 Ga)
“the protocraton”.
– The Narryer Terrane (3.8 - 2.62 Ga)
and the subdivided EGST (<3.0 Ga)
were accreted onto the nucleus.
– The relationship with the 3.5 - 2.62 Ga
South West Terrane is unclear.
Recent mapping in the Northeastern
Eastern Goldfields by GSWA has further
subdivided the Eastern Goldfields.

Eastern Goldfields Superterrane
IFS: Ida Fault System;
OFS: Ockerburry Fault System;
HFS: Hootanui Fault System;
YFS: Yamarna Fault System.
• Major fault systems divide the Eastern
Goldfields Superterrane into 4 different
terranes.
• These fault systems mark stratigraphic
discontinuities.

Remote past….
• Recognition of the Kalgoorlie/ Kambalda
Stratigraphy (Woodall, 1965; Travis et al.,
1971).
• Regional application of Kalgoorlie
stratigraphy (e.g. Gemuts and Theron,
1975).
• Recognition of early low-angle structures
(Archiblad et al., 1978; Platt et al., 1978).
• Stratigraphic associations (Hallberg, 1985).

Kalgoorlie Terrane
• GSWA outcrop mapping late 80’s – 90’s.
• Swager & Griffin (1990). 1st regional publication.
• Original idea of a single Komatiite unit.
• Regional stratigraphy developed for the
Kalgoorlie Terrane by Swager & Griffin.
• CSIRO through later Komatiite studies (e.g. Hill
et al., 1995) built upon this.
• Recognition of a regional nature to the key
marker horizon/ komatiite event.

Integrated Bedrock Geology seamless mapping and
stratigraphic framework methodology;
Issue - Lack of “spatial” (structural) continuity of the
mafic-ultramafic-mafic succession throughout the
Kalgoorlie Terrane. To accommodate this we
package these disparate formations into subgroups
within the Kalgoorlie Group.
• Subgroups are a convenient way to accommodate
for the structurally dismembered and complex
geology.
We hope to further constrain the tectonically relatable
Kalgoorlie, Gindalbie, Kurnalpi and Black Flag Groups
under the “Eastern Goldfields Supergroup”.
Separated to the East from the Burtville Supergroup.

Value add  Geochemistry !
Compile geochemical end-member limits to
key lithologies/ stratigraphy for use in
regional-scale studies;
1) Discriminate between lithologies and
correlate stratigraphy.
2) Designate key ‘type sections’ of
geochemically constrained stratigraphic
successions  test the working
stratigraphy/ tectonic models.
3) Aid in assigning formal stratigraphy.
Interpreted GSWA 1:500K bedrock geology showing
drill core that have to date been sampled.
Granites  Future emphasis - Integrate granite
suites via geochem/ geochron data to construct a
holistic stratigraphic model.

Conclusions
• The Kalgoorlie Group (2720–2690 Ma) includes the main mafic/
ultramafic succession between the Ida and Ockerburry Faults.
• Older than 2800 Ma mafic/ ultramafic/ sedimentary succession locally
underlies the Kalgoorlie Group (c.f. Marshall Pool Subgroup, Leonora area and
potentially further south).
• Similar successions which underlie the Kalgoorlie Group ‘type stratigraphy’
around Coolgardie and Agnew areas are also potentially >2800 Ma.
• The Kalgoorlie Group is generally uncomfortably overlain by felsic
volcanic – volcaniclastic – sedimentary rocks of the Black Flag Group
or its lateral equivalents.
• The Black Flag ‘type rocks’ are uncomfortably overlain by late basin
sediments (e.g. the Kurrawang Formation).
• Felsic/ mafic associations of the Gindalbie Group to the East are
tectonically juxtaposed to the Kalgoorlie Group.

  • 2. Government of Western Australia Department of Mines and PetroleumGovernment of Western Australia Department of Mines and PetroleumGovernment of Western Australia Department of Mines and Petroleum Project scope • Assign stratigraphy where possible, while resolving and extrapolating the “accepted” Kalgoorlie stratigraphy. • Integrate magmatic history of mafic and felsic volcanics; granites, mafic intrusions and successions. • Collect new data (geochron & geochem) and revise mapping where necessary.
  • 3. Government of Western Australia Department of Mines and PetroleumGovernment of Western Australia Department of Mines and PetroleumGovernment of Western Australia Department of Mines and Petroleum Why?? • Limited by 2D view. – Aim is to harmonize our understanding of the geology in the Eastern Goldfields by producing an “integrated bedrock geological platform” (IGB) to accommodate 3D and 4D geology! • Lack of consensus on a stratigraphic/ terrane model. – Build the “essential framework” for a 3D and 4D geological interpretation to better understand the tectonic setting. • Invigorate Greenfields exploration. – 3D and 4D framework for mineralisation modelling.

To accommodate this we package these disparate formations into subgroups within the Kalgoorlie Group. • Subgroups are a convenient way to accommodate for the structurally dismembered and complex geology. We hope to further constrain the tectonically relatable Kalgoorlie, Gindalbie, Kurnalpi and Black Flag Groups under the “Eastern Goldfields Supergroup”. Separated to the East from the Burtville Supergroup. Current seamless mapping coverage.

Government of Western Australia Department of Mines and PetroleumGovernment of Western Australia Department of Mines and PetroleumGovernment of Western Australia Department of Mines and Petroleum Currently…. Value add  Geochemistry ! Compile geochemical end-member limits to key lithologies/ stratigraphy for use in regional-scale studies; 1) Discriminate between lithologies and correlate stratigraphy. 2) Designate key ‘type sections’ of geochemically constrained stratigraphic successions  test the working stratigraphy/ tectonic models. 3) Aid in assigning formal stratigraphy. Interpreted GSWA 1:500K bedrock geology showing drill core that have to date been sampled. Granites  Future emphasis - Integrate granite suites via geochem/ geochron data to construct a holistic stratigraphic model.
  • 24. Government of Western Australia Department of Mines and PetroleumGovernment of Western Australia Department of Mines and PetroleumGovernment of Western Australia Department of Mines and Petroleum Conclusions • The Kalgoorlie Group (2720–2690 Ma) includes the main mafic/ ultramafic succession between the Ida and Ockerburry Faults. • Older than 2800 Ma mafic/ ultramafic/ sedimentary succession locally underlies the Kalgoorlie Group (c.f. Marshall Pool Subgroup, Leonora area and potentially further south). • Similar successions which underlie the Kalgoorlie Group ‘type stratigraphy’ around Coolgardie and Agnew areas are also potentially >2800 Ma. • The Kalgoorlie Group is generally uncomfortably overlain by felsic volcanic – volcaniclastic – sedimentary rocks of the Black Flag Group or its lateral equivalents. • The Black Flag ‘type rocks’ are uncomfortably overlain by late basin sediments (e.g. the Kurrawang Formation). • Felsic/ mafic associations of the Gindalbie Group to the East are tectonically juxtaposed to the Kalgoorlie Group.
