Explanation on 3Dface technology

1. 3D Face Model<br />Video<br />In this video you can see how a 3D face model computed with our technology looks like. As you can see the face model looks very realistic. Therefore, it can be used in different services such us as the digital make-up or enhancing video calls and video messaging.<br /> <br />Demonstration<br />To demonstrate how our technology works, first we take a portrait picture. The picture doesn’t have to be of high quality. Therefore, the camera of a mobile phone can be used. After sending the picture to the system, our technology automatically computes the 3D face model out of it. The computed 3D model looks very similar to the original face in the picture. As you can see, there are some slight differences of light conditions between the original picture and the 3D model. However, our technology enables us to modify the light conditions of the 3D face. We can also rotate the 3D face model in all directions.<br />One of the possible usages of this technology is the Digital Make-up. It often happens that we take a very nice picture but we don’t look nice in it. The 3D face technology allows enhancing some facial features. Therefore, it can be used to modify faces in photos. For now, we can enhance the smile of a person. We can also modify the eye-brows so we can make a person in the picture look angrier or more surprised.<br />Another possible usage of this technology is what we call the “Personal Virtual Avatar Façade”. DOCOMO has provided to customers video call services since 2001. Video calls are still not popular and not a lot of persons use them. One of the probable reasons of this unpopularity is that customers do not want to answer video calls when they are in awkward situations. Since we can animate the mouth of the 3D model realistically, customers can replace their selves by a personal avatar in video calls. The personal avatar will look exactly the same as the customer.<br />Conclusion:<br />In summary, the 3D face model can enhance communication in multiple ways. I have presented to you two possible use cases but a lot of other use cases and therefore services can be provided to customers using the 3D face model. This technology is still in a research status but we are confident that we can progress quickly in order to have great services and provide them to DOCOMO customers. <br />
