5. Consider the title of your text and
its significance in the story so far
What is the connection between the
title and story? If the significance is
not yet clear, discuss why you feel
that it might become significant later
on. Give your best educated response.
The title of the play is “The Importance
of Being Earnest” which has a double
meaning in terms of significance in the
story. The word “Earnest” means to be
genuine or sincere which is significant
because the characters in the play are
distinctly not genuine or sincere. The
second significance is in the name
“Ernest” which is the name that Jack
and Algernon adopt to fool others
which causes many issues.

6. Share a stand-out
quote from your text
Identify a quote that spoke to you
personally or moved you in some way.
Share a single quote which you thought
was intriguing, wise, clever or that you
could personally relate to and be sure
to include the page number and a 2-
sentence explanation of your choice.
This quote stood out because Lady
Bracknell is suggesting that behaving well
and feeling well contradict each other. This
means that in order for one to feel well they
have to behave badly. This is interesting
because it shows that the societal rules
concerning good behavior are oppressive
and detrimental to the overall health and
well-being of the individual.

7. Share a quote that is
reflective of a major
theme in the text
The quote below shows Algernon
discussing Jack pretending to be his
younger brother Ernest in order to behave
badly in the city and Algernon’s fake friend
Lord Bunbury who he uses to get out of
social oblibligations. This is reflective of a
couple major themes in including
Deception, Manipultation, and Pursuit of
Pleasure in the play.

8. What culture and time period
are represented in this text?
What time period is the story set
and in what country does it take
place? Identify what culture is
being represented and explain
how is it reflected in the text.
The play was written published in England in
1895 which was during the Victorian Era.
The play is a reflection of what was known
as the Aesthetic or Decadence movement
occurring in Europe at the time which
rejected former Elizabethan era ideals that
literature and art should be moral and
instruct people on how to behave
appropriately and instead felt that literature
had no social responsibility and often
depicted characters and situations that were
less than savory and focused on the more
tawdry and questionable human behaviors.
