We aren't a viral sensation, but we've seen consistent growth from the
day we released our first keyword-targeted video.
In fact, in that same 7-month period, our channel received almost 3
million minutes of watch time (equivalent to 6 years of attention).
Our channel isn't really large; we only post one video per week, and
our industry isn't particularly "interesting."
In comparison to our major competitors, we have a tiny subscriber
base.
But that's one of the things I like about YouTube SEO.
Everyone has the ability to entertain, engage, and rank others.
From start to finish, you'll discover how to rank your YouTube videos in
this post.
What is YouTube SEO and how does it work?
YouTube SEO refers to the practice of optimizing your videos,
playlists, and channels such that they appear high in YouTube's
organic search results for a specific search query.
Rather than attempting to tap into every possible source of traffic in
YouTube analytics, I'll concentrate on ranking videos in YouTube
search, with a few pointers on how to "double dip" your video rankings
in Google search.
As a result, I'm not going to talk about suggested videos, browse
features, or other traffic sources.
The workings of YouTube's search engine algorithm
In two phrases, YouTube describes its discovery and search ranking
system.
The ranking of videos is determined by a number of variables,
including how closely the title, description, and video content match
the viewer's query.
We also look at which videos have had the highest engagement for a
query and make sure they're easy to access for viewers.
Yes, keywords are important from both an on-page and an "in-video"
standpoint.
It's crucial to match search intent.
However, high interaction is a necessary component of efficient video
SEO.
They want you to spend as much time as possible on their platform
(even if it's not on your own videos).
That's because more video views equals more adverts aired, which
equals more money in Alphabet Inc's bank account.
Most importantly, they want you to increase video interaction, and
they'll reward you with increased visibility.
Likes/dislikes, comments, CTR, audience retention, average watch
time, end screen clicks, card clicks, and so on are all metrics that may
be measured in YouTube analytics.
What's the bottom line?
Your prospects of ranking your YouTube videos for a meaningful term
are close to none if you can't captivate your audience.

Let's get started on the 7-step procedure for improving your video's
YouTube search ranking.
Step 1: Conduct keyword research on YouTube.
You won't acquire search traffic if you don't target terms with a high
search volume.
In March—June, we had some firsthand experience with this.
For our old Marketing with Ahrefs series, we launched a series of
product-related films, which are designed to educate our users rather
than drive search traffic.
For our "keyword ideas" video, we'll get lifetime search traffic.
We're not advocating that you only make videos that are
keyword-targeted.
There are several approaches to tackling trending issues, using
suggested viewpoints, and creating content for existing clients.
However, unlike Google's traditional search engine optimization,
YouTube lacks an official keyword research tool.
And many third-party programs simply spit out random numbers from
Google Keyword Planner.
Fortunately, there are tools and techniques available to help you figure
out how many people are searching for specific terms on YouTube.
YouTube's recommendation is to use Google Trends in conjunction
with it.
Suggest on YouTube is comparable to Google Suggest.
Simply type a seed term into the search window, and a list of relevant
inquiries containing your keywords will appear.
An asterisk can also be used before or after your target term to
behave as a "wildcard."
We can enter a handful of YouTube's ideas into Google Trends
because we don't have an official tool to see search volumes.
However, Google Trends compares keywords based on "relative
popularity."
As a result, take these projections with a grain of salt.
We recently published the updated edition of Keywords Explorer,
which now contains search volumes and metrics for Google, YouTube,
Bing, Amazon, Baidu, and other search engines.
Simply type in a term or a list of keywords to get country-specific
search volumes, clicks data, worldwide search volumes, and five
keyword concept reports.
To be completely honest, I didn't utilize this program for the majority of
2018, but I started utilizing it in early 2019 to improve our current films
and, of course, to create new ones.
Keyword research in bulk
When you're looking for a large list of keyword suggestions, Keywords
Explorer comes in handy.
You can utilize the Chrome extensions from vidIQ or TubeBuddy.
Simply type a query into YouTube and look for VidIQ's "Related
Queries" or TubeBuddy's "Most Used Tags" sections on the right
sidebar.
Copy and paste all relevant keywords into Keywords Explorer
(supports up to 10k keywords).
Then, according to our database, we'll show you all of the keywords
with high YouTube search volume.
Although search volumes are impressive, Keywords Explorer's true
strength lies in its ability to generate new keyword suggestions.
Make fresh keyword suggestions.
Assume you're starting a YouTube channel to unbox and review tech
products.
So, as a starting point, let's use "unboxing" as our seed term.
Then proceed to the phrase match report, which includes all of our
database's terms that contain your seed.
So, what exactly do you want to open?
Perhaps cell phones, video game consoles, or photographic
equipment?
The problem is that no one will be looking for "unbox cell phone."
People look for unboxings using specific queries (for example,
"iPhone X unboxing").
So, let's use the "Include" filter to limit down our findings.
Simply enter some brand names, pick "any word," and you're ready to
go.
Step 2: Determine the purpose of your search.
The reason a user types a query into a search engine is referred to as
search intent (or keyword intent).
For the most part, search engines can figure it out for you.
Simply look up the top 3–5 results for the term you want to rank for on
YouTube and see what they're talking about (content and angle).
Rather than recreating the wheel, copy what others have done.
If you wanted to educate someone how to build a website, for
example, you'd definitely provide them a step-by-step guide.
YouTube concurs.
Step #3: Use a high-retention video to satisfy search
intent.
You may infer "satisfaction" on YouTube by looking at viewer retention.
Likes, shares, comments, and higher ranks are frequently the result of
great retention.
YouTube's objectives are to:
"assist viewers in finding the videos they wish to see."
"Improve long-term audience pleasure and engagement."
So it's up to you to make a video that will better engage and hold the
audience's attention.
