PROPERTY AND
BUILDINGS
How do you measure the success of a building
or property? It performs its function beyond all
expectation. It attracts, even delights all those
who live in, work in or visit it. It uses energy in
the most cost-effective and sustainable way. It
sits sympathetically within its surroundings or
stands out as a beacon. Or, ultimately, it stands the
test of time.
We aim to meet all these criteria and more, when we
bring our specialist skills to a building or property
project. From The Shard in London to the World
Trade Center in New York, Grand Palladium in
Mumbai to the United Tower in Kuwait – our
buildings more than measure up.
17
OURSECTORS
URBAN
DEVELOPMENT
Utilities, waste treatment, public spaces,
transportation design, efficient energy supplies,
and municipal buildings: these and more
besides are the arteries and organs that make
up a city’s infrastructure. They are vital and need
constant attention as the city or community grows
and develops.
We have over 50 years’ experience working on new
rapidly-expanding cities and established cities with
an aging infrastructure – delivering comprehensive,
innovativeandcost-effectivesolutionsthatbringlife
to land and developments.
Our fully integrated environmental approach also
allows us to address the growing pace of human
activities and related environmental pressures
for Future Cities.
18
OURSECTORS
TRANSPORTATION
As the world’s population grows, getting people
safelyandseamlesslyfromAtoBisamajorchallenge
for all our governments. A country’s economy and
quality of life depend on well-run transport systems.
That’s where we come in.
We’re one of the world’s largest providers of
transportation services, employing more than
4,000 transportation professionals worldwide. Our
strengths lie in planning, analysing, designing and
managing aviation, bridges, highways, intelligent
traffic systems, marine, roads and rail projects.
Like a well-run train service our projects are always
on time. We’re also always on budget and deliver
world-class standards. No two projects are the
same, but many transport systems the world over
are equally successful thanks to us.
19
OURSECTORS
ENVIRONMENT
We can’t ignore the environment. Even in the
unlikely event that anyone would want to, there are
laws bringing us all into line. In the face of climate
change, the need to maintain a balance between our
humanandenvironmentalrequirementshasbecome
more crucial than ever.
As experts in the built and natural world, we have
specialists working with and advising businesses and
governments in every area of environmental impact:
specialists ensuring we all enjoy a sustainable future.
They work and advise many key areas from Energy
SupplyandRenewablestoAcousticsandVibrations,
Environmental Due Diligence to Future Cities.

OURSECTORS
INDUSTRIAL
When it comes to industry, we couldn’t be more
industrious. We work in almost every sector
of industry from Food to Pharmaceutical and
Biotechnologies, Drink and Consumer Industry to
Process Energy.

OURSECTORS
MINING
Cost issues. Resource nationalism. The complexities
of mining deeper underground. Optimising existing
mines. Environmental concerns. The challenges
facing the mining sector seem endless.
It’s no wonder so many clients come to us for our
rich vein of expertise and support. And we offer it
throughout the project – from conceptual studies in
the feasibility stage through to detailed engineering
and complete EPCM. We build up intricate and
holistic knowledge that feeds into all aspects of our
work – nothing is ever lost in translation.
Our expertise runs deep and spans everything from
resource and reserve modeling to metallurgical
testing; geotechnical and mine design to detailed
engineering for mining infrastructure. Our work
takes us all over the world on the smallest to largest,
award-winning projects.
22
OURSECTORS
RENEWABLE
ENERGY
Onshore and offshore wind. Solar power. Bioenergy.
Hydro power. Thermal power. These are all
renewable powers of the future. We are committed
to a sustainable future and are happy to offer our
clients expertise in these areas.
We can advise and work on every stage of a project –
from pre-feasibility right through design to operation
and maintenance and onto decommissioning.
We’ll get involved with the first feasibility studies,
providing advice on technical, financial, emission and
environmental issues, to engineering design during
the construction phase. We also offer long-term
operational management support services.
Our broad expertise and project management skills
mean we can anticipate problems before they arise,
address them and so minimize risk.
23
OURSECTORS

INTRODUCINGWSP
This is why we created Task Force. It was piloted in
1995 by the then CEO of WSP, Chris Cole.
Members of Task Force are taken on for two years
and have the opportunity to train in areas such as
leadershipandcareerdevelopment.Duringthistime
they are able to create a wide network of contacts
and excellent knowledge about WSP around the
world.
Some of our early Task Force members are now
running the company – Mark Naysmith in the UK,
Tom Smith as part of the Leadership Team and Tom
Bower in the Middle East.

IT’S ALL ABOUT
SUSTAINABILITY
27
INTRODUCINGWSP
Itseemsthat‘sustainability’hasbecomeafashionable
word that companies bandy around because they
think that they should. It is used so often, it can seem
to hold no real meaning.
This is certainly not the case with WSP. In every
market sector that we work, we are creating the
future. A future that will alter lives. A future that
must be sustainable and will:
RESTORE THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
TRANSFORM THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT
DECARBONISE
WASTE NOTHING
ENRICH PEOPLE’S LIVES
It’s our mission to achieve these five aspects of
sustainability in every project we under-take. Only
then can we call it successful.

STANDING TALL
ONE WORLD TRADE CENTER, USA
At a symbolic height of 541 m (1,776 feet), the
Freedom Tower will provide an inspirational
and enduring landmark in the New York City
skyline. The tower’s footprint of 61 m by 61 m
will be the same size as that of the original Twin
Towers. We provided structural engineering
services to meet or exceed more demanding
anticipated security codes and standards. The
new 102-story tower provides an extraordinary
level of life safety features including those that
will make it an unprecedented archetype of
security and blast resistance. In addition
to its iconic design, it will provide a world-
class model of energy efficiency and
environmental sustainability.

REVITALISATION
BC PLACE STADIUM REVITALISATION, CANADA
There were critical timelines for the extensive
multidisciplineefforttorevitalizethe25-year-old
stadium in preparation for the 2010 Winter
Olympics in Vancouver. The key challenge
was to replace the existing air supported roof
with a cable truss retractable roof which
transformed the old stadium to an open-
air field sports venue while maintaining the
multi-use functionality of an enclosed facility.
The award-winning revitalisation included
an integrated network of energy-efficient
digitally controlled architectural lighting
which animates the venue on command,
transforming the city’s skyline.

  • 9. 16 OURSECTORS PROPERTY AND BUILDINGS How do you measure the success of a building or property? It performs its function beyond all expectation. It attracts, even delights all those who live in, work in or visit it. It uses energy in the most cost-effective and sustainable way. It sits sympathetically within its surroundings or stands out as a beacon. Or, ultimately, it stands the test of time. We aim to meet all these criteria and more, when we bring our specialist skills to a building or property project. From The Shard in London to the World Trade Center in New York, Grand Palladium in Mumbai to the United Tower in Kuwait – our buildings more than measure up. 17 OURSECTORS URBAN DEVELOPMENT Utilities, waste treatment, public spaces, transportation design, efficient energy supplies, and municipal buildings: these and more besides are the arteries and organs that make up a city’s infrastructure.
