4. PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
I'm a hard-working, friendly, honest and loyal young man who can work well
under pressure, I pride myself on my punctuality, self-discipline and my
ability to adopt to change.
I consider any job or assignment as a challenge and get along well with my
fellow team members.
I further believe that my strong Christian principles serve as the basis for my
success as a young professional.
I have leadership qualities and maintain a good balance between
Academics, Sports and Culture, as witnessed above.
The above characteristics is supported from the following feedback I
received from my managers on some of my audit engagements.
- 5 -
September – November 2014 AG Secondment Local Municipality
Rating: Highly Effective
Lizelle van Loggerenberg (AG Manager) noted: “Marinus had a positive impact on
our audit team. He did his work in exercising due care. It was really nice
working with Marinus and he had good relationships with the team members and
the client. He always thought about what he was doing and how he can perform
his work in alternative ways to ensure effectiveness.”
March – April 2015 Diamond Mine in the Northern Cape listed on Canadian
Stock Exchange
Rating: Highly Effective
Rensche Van Rensburg’s (Engagement Manager) Overall Comments:
“Marinus audited the sections the company’s operations under a
tight deadline:
-Diamond revenue: complex recognition which includes commission, profit share
and credit notes.
-Diamond and other debtors: complex accounting which includes diamond debtors
with different recognition per carat size and high risk of recoverability.
-Assisted with lease straight lining and commitment documentation
Your performance was consistently of a very high standard and often exceeded
expectations of your role. You deliver high performance results across all
aspects of your role. You have many strengths and minor weaknesses and core
values/capabilities are superior.
Examples of 'often exceeded expectations':
- Was able to complete the audit work within deadline on a very complex revenue
section. (within a shortened deadline from the prior year by a week.)
Complexity level expected to audit on a third year.
-Assisted the first year and supervisor with lease straight lining and
documentation, even when rotated off the client. Included review of these
working papers.
-Assisted with the asset verification even though he had remaining work.
-Was willing to suggest efficiency improvement of testing.
Strengths:
-Really committed towards the team and engagement to finish the work allocated.
Takes responsibility for his work.
-Has a willingness to improve, understand why a procedure is performed, and to
be the best.
-Is able to audit bulk entries and spreadsheets by using excel and shortcuts.
-Remains positive under stress and is driven to work to finish the section.
-Ethical values are superior by means of keeping the team positive and going
the extra mile
May – June 2015 Local Hardware, construction essentials retail Store
Rating: Highly Effective
Thinus De vries’ (Engagement Manager) comments:
“…This was the first time Marinus worked on the client, as well as being an AIC. The
engagement relates to a less complex audit engagement.
Positives:
- Although this was the first time Marinus worked on the client, he settled
- 6 -
well in and adopted quickly to the new engagement.
- He had great client relationships and the financial manager complemented
Marinus for the way he communicated and treated them.
- This was the first time he was AIC and it was clear to me that he took
ownership of the engagement and really put in an effort to ensure that the work
gets done, according to the timelines set.
- He kept me up to date of what was going on in the file, without having me to
ask.
- He tried to resolve issues himself and where he was unsure, he came with a
proposed solution to me and got my opinion.
Improvement points:
- As this was the first time he was AIC, I could see that he put in an extreme
effort. Just be careful, that you don't burn yourself out, to early in the
engagement.
Overall, I was very happy with the work Marinus delivered and the way he acted
as AIC. His performance was consistently of a very high standard and he often
exceeds the expectations of his role.
Thanks for the great effort, you've put into the engagement, it was a pleasure
to work with you!
November /December 2015 Gold mine situated in Burkina Faso (West Africa)
Entity listed on the Canadian Stock Exchange.
Rating Highly Effective
Thinus De Vries’ (Engagement Manager) Overall Comments: A highly effective
rating suggest that your overall performance is consistently of a very high standard
and often exceeds the expectations of your role. You deliver high performance
results across all aspects of your role. You have many strengths and minor
weaknesses and your demonstration of our core values and behavioural capabilities
is superior. Your performance and overall contribution is towards the top of your peer
group.
This ER relates to the interim audit of the entity, which is a fairly complex
client. The client is situated in Burkina Faso, with some individuals being
French speaking.
Marinus was responsible for the following:
- Inventory control testing
- Payroll control testing
- Journals control testing
- Journals substantive
Positives:
- Marinus was very committed, a real team player and had a positive mindset;
- His working papers were well documented and I could see that Marinus self
reviewed the working papers before marked as prepared;
- He came with solutions, instead of merely asking me what to do; and
- He completed the work within the allocated time.
Improvement points:
- Just a suggestion going forward - try not to over complicate work. Sit back
and see the bigger picture, instead of just looking at the detail. Especially
with regards to the control testing.
Overall, Marinus' performance was consistently of a very high standard and he
often exceeded the expectations of his role.
- 7 -
Thanks for the hard work MJ, I am looking forward to final!
Other comments previously on this client also by Thinus De Vries included:
- Marinus had a great attitude and adopted well to the new engagement
(especially being in West Africa);
- As Marinus previously worked a lot on AG engagements, he took the time to
understand what is expected of each procedure and why he needs to perform it;
- He did not merely take the prior year working paper and complete the same as
last year, I could really see that he used the prior year working paper as a
basis and adjusted it to add more value; and
- He was willing to learn and I could see that he took this engagement to
learn as much as possible.
Improvement points:
- Marinus should ensure that he do not over complicate the work allocate to
him and should sit back and see the bigger picture (this will happen with more
experience); and
- He should be careful not to ask after each procedure whether the work is
correctly or not (based on his AG experience, this is understandable and I
could see that it improved as the engagement continued).
Overall, Marinus's performance was consistently of a high standard and he fully
meet and sometimes exceeded the expectations of his role. I could see how
Marinus developed throughout the engagement and how he grasped certain audit
concepts.
Thanks for your hard work and dedication during the engagement. I am looking
forward to work with you again in the future and I believe that you have a lot
to offer. Keep up the good work!
