Identify which of these
materials can be reduced,
reused and recycle.
Explain the your answer.
Some materials can be
managed using two or
three “R’’ methods
instead one.
Identify the different
waste that you can see in
the photo. Classify waste
material which can be
recycled, reduced, reused,
repaired and recovered.
Suppose you have come
across on this area on
your way home, what will
you do?
How can you help make
your community clean and
better place to live in?
Activity Time
Materials to be used:
Used Paper
Ruler
Scissors
Glue
Fastener
Activity # 1
Environment-Friendly
Notepad
1. Allow the learners to
gather pad paper, or even
colored paper. Tell them to
check one side has writings.
Keep those with writings on
both side for other purposes
2. Instruct the learners to
cut into their desired
length and width those
papers with writings only
one side.
3. Ask the learners to bind
the cut pieces of paper using
glue or fastener. Tell them to
make sure that the side with
writings is on the underside
as they bind each piece of
paper.
4. Advise the learners to
set aside and let it dry.
5. Tell them that they may
now use the side without
writing as their notepad.
Activity #2
Recycled Chime
1. Cut nine pieces
(9) of yarn
measuring 20 cm
each.
2. Use sticky tape,
attach four metallic
bottle caps or crowns
along each yarn with
a distance interval of
5 cm.
3. Tape the free ends
without the bottle caps
of the pieces of yarn on
the inside of the tin can
and space them evenly
along the inner side.
4. With glue or duct tape.
Let them attach a single
loop of yarn on the closed
bottom of the can. They
can now hang their bottle
cap time.
Activity # 3
Inspect the defect
Materials to be used:
Paper
Pencil
1. Look for the things in
your house that are
already considered
defective or not
working anymore.
2. List the items down,
then write beside each
why it is defective.
3. Go over your list,
then think how the
items can be repaired to
make them useful
again. Discuss it with
your groupmates.
3. Go over your list,
then think how the
items can be repaired to
make them useful
again. Discuss it with
your group mates.
Deepening:
1. Allow the learners to
read the waste
management using 5rs
techniques on page 8-5
Deepening:
Guide Questions:
1. What other common
household materials can we
apply the 5Rs techniques? Give
example and the appropriate
techniques to be used.
Deepening:
Guide Questions:
2. In what ways do the 5R
technique help environment?
Lets go beyond:
List Five (5) things found in
your home that can replace with
other materials to reduce
garbage disposal. Give them at
least one example. Example:
Paper/Plastic cup- washable
glass or mug.
Lets go beyond:
There are two types of recycling,
the Upcycling and Downcycling.
1.Upcycling- Is a way to make a
higher material from its original
value.
2.Downcycling- Converts waste
materials into a new product with
lesser quality.
Give example of upcycling
and downcycling.
Give example of upcycling
and downcycling.
Energy from the garbage
can be harvested through a
process called pyrolysis.
How is this process done?
And what kind of energy
does it generate?
Pyrolysis is breaking
down of waste, particularly
plastic waste by heating. This
process does not involve
oxygen and generate energy
rich fuels.
Make a diagram about the 5rs.
Show what they mean and how they
are done.
Reduce- Lessening the amount of
waste in the environment. Avoiding
the usage of disposable materials of a
good example of reducing waste
Reuse- means using the same
material again for a similar
purpose.
Recycle – This involves the
creation of new product from a
material that has already sereved its
purpose.
Recover- This involves harnessing
energy from waste through certain
processes like pyrolysis. Also other
parts can be reused are recovered
from waste in a materials recovery
facility
Repair – Fixing slightly broken
things to make them useful again. This
is not only helps us reduce waste, It
also saves us money.
Do Let’s Check on page 13.
Answer Let’s Apply it on page 13.
Answer key;
1. Reusing means using material again
for the same purpose. On the other
hand, recycling means creating a new
product out of discarded materials.
2. We can get energy from Trash by
bringing them to certain facilities with
technologies such as the plastic to oil
etc.
3. By recycling, we reduce the amount
of solid waste present in the
environment.
1. Envelope of Utility bills- B
2. Perfume bottles- C
3. Empty ink cartridges - B
