Southwest monsoon or habagat during the
months of June to October. This wind
originates in southern hemisphere. When
this hemisphere experiences winter, the
wind moves toward the Asiatic mainland
but it is deflected to the right when it
passes over the equator. This deflection is
called the Coriolis effect, named after its
discoverer, Gaspard Gustave de Coriolis – a
French mathematician.

WEATHER FORECASTING AND WEATHER INSTRUMENTS
Weather forecasts is the application of science and
technology to predict the conditions of the atmosphere for
a given location and time.
Weather updates are reported by an expert called
meteorologist and broadcasted to us by the weatherman.
Meteorology is the branch of science that deals with study
of weather..

Weather Instruments
Thermometer
– measures the
surrounding air temperature.

Barometer
- is a scientist instrument
that is used to measure atmospheric
pressure. It is used especially in
forecasting weather and determining
altitude.
Torricelli – an Italian scientist that built
the first barometer in 1643.

Hygrometer
- Is an instrument that is used to measure
humidity. A mechanical hygrometer uses
human or horse hairs which stretch as they
absorb moisture.

Psychrometer
- is a simple type
of hygrometer.
measures the relative
humidity in the
atmosphere through the
use of two
thermometers.
a. Dry bulb thermometer
- Is used to measure
the temperature by being
exposed to the air.
b. Wet bulb thermometer -
measures temperature by
having the bulb dipped in a
liquid.

measuring wind speed and is a
common weather station
instrument.

Windsocks
- are commonly used at the
airports to indicate the wind
direction for takeoffs and landings.

Wind Vane
- is an instrument that
determines the direction from which
the wind is blowing. It spins on a rod
and points in the direction from
which the wind comes.

Rain gauge
- is used to measure the amount
of rainfall that has fallen over a
specific period of time. An official rain
gauge consists of a large cylinder with
a funnel and a smaller measuring tube
inside.
