3. WHAT MADE THE TRAILER SUCH A
SUCCESS?
• The trailer was a huge hit, exciting fans all over the world into seeing the
hit movie Suicide Squad. However the reason why the trailer was such a
hit was because of how the trailer gave away a bit of information about
the story line but not giving away too much. Causing fans all over the
world to want to see it. However it wasn’t just how the trailer had humor,
action shots and show casing the famous and favorite movie villains. The
trailer had the codes and conventions of what an action and adventure
movie should have and also including the micro elements and their hidden
meanings.
MICRO ELEMENTS
-Mise en scene
-Costume
-Sound
-Editing

• TRANSITIONS
• ANTAGONIST/PROTAGONIST
• VIOLENCE
• WEAPONS
• NON LINEAR NARRATIVE
• ENIGMA
• SPETICLE
• GADGETRY

5. MICRO ELEMNT: EDITING
• The trailer itself was mainly fast paced, this was to ensure that the audience would be on the
end of their seat and be very engaged to watch every single detail so they wouldn’t miss a
thing. It could also suggest how the storyline would be; how the characters would have
action after action, where there wouldn't’t be any breaks. It could also suggest how the
characters now have freedom it is how excited they are, the fast pace could match their
excitement. However, there are some scenes in the trailer (mainly the beginning) where it is
slow paced which could suggest how the characters are very bored being stuck in prison, and
that is how they feel their days goes.
• The trailer also showcased the use of CGI, this suggests how the extraordinary these
characters are, they aren’t normal. It could suggest to the audience to exp3ect amazing
things from these extraordinary characters. It could also suggest how the film itself is nothing
like any other films, showcasing how it is a must see movie
The use of editing fits right into the action and adventure genre because in majority of action and
adventure films it is normally fast paced and it does normally have an extraordinary charter
defying all the odds.
6. MICRO ELEMENTS:MISE EN SCENE
• Costume: The costumes on each character is very authentic on the
character that was wearing it. For example Annabelle is clearly not a villain
from her costume. She is the only main character wearing a suit, which
indicates she is of high power and importance. It could also suggest how
she is perhaps the brains of the operation. The jokers costume is very odd
looking, it also doesn’t help that his makeup makes him look very
intimidating. His iconic joker costume suggests that he is the joker that the
audience knows and loves but with a twist. This causes the audience to
want to find out what is new about this version of the joker.
• Lighting: Throughout the trailer the lighting was very dark, lowlight. Many
of the scenes shown had dark lighting but the characters were outside.
Which suggests how the majority if the scenes would be shot at night. It
could also show how twisted and dark the characters are. The darkness
that surrounds them in the scenes shows how viscous and scary these
characters really are
7. • Props: The props that were shown were cars and guns. This again suggests that
there will be a lot of violent scenes, however the fast cars that were shown could
suggest how fast paced the movie and it could perhaps be hard to keep up if you
weren’t paying attention
• Blocking: For the most part the blocking of the squad varied in each scene,
showcasing how each villain had a strength that could put them as a leader.
However as the blocking varied it could suggest that each member all had equal
power and all were important as each other. However if there were to be a leader
it would’ve been deadshot as he is always in the center of each scene, suggesting
that he might get more screen time than the other characters.
The use of mise en scene is very important as it makes up each character and scene. It
gives the audience a chance to see what these character are capable of and their
personalities. It also gives the audience a hint of what to expect in the movie from the
props to the lighting.
8. MIRCO ELEMENTS: SOUND
• Non diegetic incidental music was used throughout the whole of the trailer. The
use of Panic at the Discos! Cover of Bohemian Rhapsody indicates that there is a
lot of humor in the movie. This is because the soundtrack is very “quirky”
sounding, when it was paired with the violence going on in the trailer it looks and
sounds very odd as you wouldn’t assume a violence shot to be very humorous. It
could also suggest how the character find violence silly, fun instead of serious and
scary.
• Diegetic sound effects are also used in the trailer, especially when there is a gun
firing scene and the sound of a helicopter approaching. This clearly suggests to the
audience that there will be a lot of violent and action violent scenes happing in the
move, and perhaps an escape scene. As action and adventure movies normally
have either a car or a helicopter to escape from danger.
The use of sound is very important in the trailer as it does give away some information
on what will happen in the movie, whether that be violence or whether the movie will
be serious, funny or romantic
9. MICRO ELEMENTS: CAMERA
• Different camera angles were used on each character, giving away to the audience
the amount of power they have. For example, the use of a low angle was used on
the Joker. This suggests to the audience that the Joker is very powerful and it
makes him look very intimidating. The high angle also causes the joker to look
psychotic and creepy, which would suggest to the audience that the Joker is not
exactly right in the end.
• A wide shot was also used frequently when the squad were walking together. This
shows to the audience that they are united as a team. It also allows the audience
to look at each character individually and allow them to make assumptions on
each character. Wide shots are commonly used in the action and adventure genre
as it makes the actor look very powerful and invincible.
Camera shots make up the genre of film and allow the audience to pick up vital
information. By varying the camera shots it allows the audience to stay engaged and it
also gives away hints of information the audience can pick up on from the scene. For
example, if a scene had a dutch angle on a character it would cause confusion for the
audience and therefore suggest that the character is very odd
10. EFFECT ON THE AUDIENCE
• All of the micro elements and conventions effect the audience as each
give away vital information an audience member would need to know. It
would determine whether or not an audience member would want to
watch the movie. To make Suicide Squad a successful movie it would need
to have things the fans from the comics want. It should also appeal to
everyone, in order to do this the trailer would need to show some humor
(the soundtrack provides that) romance (the Joker and Harley) violence
(gun fighting scene) and an easy storyline to follow. Because the trailer
includes these more people would watch it as it has a lot of elements that
would appeal to them
