2. A report by environmental action group WRAP found that over 60% of households in the UK reported
recycling at least one item in 2019. However, the organization said that people still miss recycling
essential items like foil and aerosol, which may contribute to the island nation’s landfill. Over 25% of
its respondents also said that they recycled more food waste than they did in 2019. The group
attributed these changes to the more positive attitudes that residents have towards recycling.
Great Responses
This positive response towards recycling could be because of the recognition in the Recycle Now
logo. WRAP said that over 75% of households in the UK recognize Recycle Now’s swoosh graphic. This
was a significant rise compared with 2018 when only 45% of people recognized it. The same goes for
the on-pack recycling labels found on various consumer goods, which saw a 10% increase in
recognition.
3. The local governments and word-of-mouth are also doing their part to spread recycling information.
It found that two-thirds of households in the UK reported getting recycling and waste collection
service info from their local councils in the past year. More than half of them said that they’re
recommending recycling to their friends and family. And while over 34% of households said they saw
posts about recycling on social media, council leaflets are still their primary source of knowledge.
Readjusting Targets
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs recently told the press that the UK’s
recycling rate in 2017 went up from 45.2% to 45.7% in 2017. It is just 4.8% shy of its 2020 target of
50% for all households, which was set by the European Union.
In a recent release, however, the Government said that it’s going to release a new strategy for
resource and waste management that may look beyond the EU’s standards.
