2. Introduction
• The Non-Aligned Movement is a forum of 120 countries that are
not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc.
• The NAM was created during the collapse of the colonial
system.
• It was mainly created for the independence struggles of the
people of Africa, Asia, Latin America and other regions of the
world and at the height of the cold war.
3. History & Evolution
• Throughout the history of Non-aligned movement, the
fundamental role was the preservation of world peace
and security.
• “Bandung Asian African Conference” was the immediate
reason for creation of this movement which was held in
1995.
• After 6 years from Bandung meeting a wider
geographical basis was covered when first summit
conference was held in Belgrade in 1961.

6. Membership
• Members and other participants of Non-Aligned movement
were categories into three sections. Which are;

• Currently, the movement has 120 Member states, 17 observer
countries and 17 observer organizations.
7. Policies and Ideology
• Not to align any of the power blocs
• Opposition of any kind of military alliances such as NASTO, SEATO, Warsaw
Pact etc.
• Not to remain aloof from international problems and politics
• Upholds rights of all people for freedom and justice.
• Eliminate all causes which could lead to war.
• Advocate sovereign equality of all states.
• Encourage friendly relation among nations.

10. Non-aligned summits host in Colombo
1. This summit was the biggest international conference ever held.
2. The summit was publicly marked in various ways with releasing
-coins
-stamps
3. This was the first heads of states or government summit of the movement organized in
Asia.
11. Summits
• The first summit of the NAM
was held in Belgrade, capital
of Serbia in 1961, with the
participation of 29 countries.
So far there are 18 summits
held in different union and the
last summit was held on
October 25-26, 2019, in
Azerbaijan, with the
participation of over 120

Relationship
between cold
war and non-
Aligned
movement
• Cold war which is started
at the end of the World
War two in 1945 and it
last until the fall of the
Soviet Union in 1991.
• Cold War is a
competition, series of
confrontations between
USA and USSR. Cold War
is not a shooting war.
Both countries have the
capacity to respond to
the attacks, but they
never initiate a war.
Non- Aligned countries
play a huge role in
reducing Cold War
conflicts.
13. Non- Aligned Movement allowed countries to not sided
with Eastern Alliance or with Western Alliance . It hosted
several conferences and summits that help to develop a
unity among neutral nations.
Non- Aligned Movement had a belief that a competition
between superpowers caused damage to the world and
they started to spread the idea of global cooperation.
Jawaharlal Nehru, one of the main leaders in Non-Aligned
Moment play a key role in mediating
Between the two Koreas.
