Unit 4: LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
• To become aware of the existence of other languages and cultures.
• To value our own culture and share it with others.
• To develop intercultural relations that can overcome stereotypes and
prejudices towards other languages and cultures.
•To encourage the development of values related to education for global
citizenship through an intercultural dialogue.
The purpose of teaching is not to try to change learners values,
but to make them explicit and conscious in any evaluative
response to others.
2. WARM UP
- To start the class, the teacher will ask the students if they know what
North-American people usually eat for breakfast, lunch, tea time and/or
dinner.
- Once learners finish answering what they know about them, the teacher
invites them to watch a power point presentation about this topic.
Type of interaction: Teacher - students.
Macro-skills: Speaking.
Timing: 15 minutes.
Materials: Computer.
Second activity:
While watching the PPT for the second time, the teacher will ask the following
questions:
1. How is the name of this food in English?
2. Do you like ___?
3. How often do you eat it?
4. Is it healthy or unhealthy?
Third activity:
Taking into account the food already mentioned, in pairs students will have to
create a dialogue in which one of them is from the USA and the other from
Argentina. They will have to ask one another about their typical food.
For example:
North-American: What do you eat for lunch?
Argentinian: On Sundays, I eat barbecue with salad. And what do you drink?
North-American: I drink coke for lunch. What is your favourite food?
Argentinian: I like milanesas with chips.
In order to check the activity, the teacher will ask each pair to act it out to
share it with the rest of the class.
3. Type of interaction: Teacher - students.
Macro-skills: Writing and speaking.
Timing: 20 minutes.
Closing reflexion:
As a way of summarizing the lesson, the teacher will tell the
students that no culture is better than others. Although a culture
has different traditions from the ones we have,it doesn’t mean they
are superior or inferior. Every culture has values that must be
respected as we all share the same world.
