Zambia is a landlocked country with land area of 743390 sq. km between Angola in the west,Namibia,
Botswana and Zimbabwe in the south, Mozambique, Malawi and Tanzania in the east, and the
Democratic Republic of Congo in the north.
Zambia’s natural resources include uranium, silver, cobalt, copper, coal, lead, silver, zinc, emeralds,
and gold. Zambia is also a chief global producer of semiprecious gemstones and cobalt. Zambia’s social
and economic backbone has always been its mining industry. But most of the people are not aware of
Manganese deposits of Zambia.
Although Zambia’s manganese mineralisation data which points to what extent mineral rich Luapula
Province for example is endowed with the energy mineral, recent mining activities in the area shows that
there is abundance.
Manganese mining is going on in Mansa in Luapula province of Zambia.Numerous small deposits are
known to occur throughout the country.
Mineralisation appear to be confined to shear zones in acidic rocks. Manganese is used for manufacturing
of battery cells.
A well organised manganese mining sub-sector has the capacity to turnaround the country's economic
fortunes, but the disorganised nature of the mining subsector leaves much to be desired as not only the
Government is losing potential revenue but also the safety proposition which is endangering lives.
Residents carrying out the ‘illegal mining’beause if government come to know , then the investers are
invited and locals lose out. So it’s necessary for government should deploy machinaries in the province
alongwith updated mining policies.
Luapula has the highest grade range of Manganese between 40 to 58 % .
