15. Objective
Creating three-dimensional design can be built by repetitive shape. This
project will explore the construction of shape considering color theory.
• Students will be able to compose a spatial design considering positive
forms and negative space.
• Students will be able to analyze their work with the vocabulary and
color.
• Students will be able to use tools for cutting.
• Students will be able to create a structural design.
16. Requirements
• Cut at least 50 pieces of the same shape out of at least 1 sheet of foam board
• The shape must be within 12-inch square;
i.e. each shape would be 2”Hx6”W, 3”x4”…
• Paint your project at least 2 colors
• Compose a three-dimensional artwork considering elements and principles of
design (especially Mass/Space/Volume/Color)
• The project must be free-standing (*you may attach it to a base, use wire, or
glue)
• Submit Progress Reports:
1. Composition planning sketch
2. Color design sketch
3. Finalized project documentation
Many things consist of repetitive shape. In nature,

DNA.
DNA consists of lines and spiral form.
Civilization. Repetition makes two forms in the composition. The building consists of cubic form and square forms.
In art, This art work is a Korean artist, Suh Do Ho’s work. A whole form is a kind of fountain.

Next, Shape. This is Escher’s print. He is a print maker and his works are characterized as a kind of trick art. The shapes of the both side of birds compensate each other. The negative shape of white birds is a positive shape of black birds. Thus, Negative shape or concavity can effect to a whole your work. Please pay attention what feature the shape you choose has.
