1. About Learning Legacy
Lessons learned from the London 2012 construction project and from
preparing and staging the Games.
2. Raising the bar for the UK’s construction industry
• The construction project for the London 2012 Olympic has been
delivered by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) on time and on
budget.
• The ODA set itself and the project’s supply chain challenging targets
and milestones, most well above industry standards and benchmarks.
The majority of these have now been achieved and, in some cases,
exceeded:
• The project has a strong health and safety record, achieved high
sustainability outcomes and challenged some of the historic and long-
standing inequalities within the UK construction sector.

3. Learning Legacy
• Learning Legacy’s aim is to share the knowledge and lessons learned
from the London 2012 construction project to raise the bar within the
construction sector and to act as a showcase for UK plc.
• The ODA has worked closely with contractors, industry partners,
government bodies and academia to capture the lessons learned and
document best-practice examples and innovations for the benefit of
future projects.

4. Developing the scope
• Several key elements were considered when identifying the scope of
the Learning Legacy:
––What did we do that was innovative?
––Could it be replicated on future projects and programmes?
––What did not go so well and what would we do differently on the next
project?
––Is there an audience for these lessons learned?
––What industry experts/representatives can we partner with to help collate
the lessons learned and/or support the dissemination?
––Who can validate the findings as best practice, such as peer reviewers?

5. Exportable skill? If yes, where about?
According to Jason Millett (CLM’s programme director – ODA’s delivery partner):
-) UK
• Rails
• Increasing airport capacity
• Ageing fleet of nuclear power stations
-) Middle East
• Qatar Fifa World Cup in 2022 + Qatar Railways Company (QRail)
• Bahrain - new airport terminal
• Kuwait - growing the capacity of its international airport
• Dubai - expansion of Dubai International Airport
• Saudi Arabia wants to build the world’s tallest tower + will invest expansion of International
Airports
-) Russia
• Ramping-up investment in infrastructure: lots of infrastructure needs upgrading and
replacing
6. So has the Learning Legacy raised the bar in industry?
• With more than 300 Learning Legacy documents produced,
• 60,000 downloads from the website, a further 12,000 downloads of
the ICE (Institution of Civil Engineering) special issues,
• 120 Learning Legacy ambassadors delivering dissemination events to
more than 4,000 attendees
…..it is fair to say that the industry has been actively engaged in passing
on the lessons learned!

7. Conclusion
John Armitt, Chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority, said:
‘We believe this is the first time that anyone has sought to capture on
this scale the experience and lessons from taking a project of the size
forward quickly before it is lost… What we are seeking to demonstrate
here is the achievements that have been made whether it’s in terms of
improved health and safety, sustainability, the skills training,
programme management, procurement measures. There is that
opportunity to learn from them going forwards.’
