Warming Up Activities!
1. Warming
Up
Activities
These activities were thought to be done at
this level because it’s a “new group of classmates” and
I think it would be important for them to know more
about each other to create a good rapport in the class.
These activities are related to Unit 1 and 2, because by
analyzingtheir personalities students can start thinking
about their future.
2. Level:elementary/secondary students.
Materials:adictionary.
Procedure:This is a very simple activity whichconsists of searching words
in a dictionary relatedtocharacteristicsthat youthink you have and could
describe youphysical or psychologically. The ideais that students find and
write down an appropriate adjective or noun that begins with each letter of
their first name. For example:a girl calledMarie wouldhave to search5
words, they could be: Modern, Ambitious, Rude, Intelligentand
Enthusiastic. The ideais that each students explain why they chose those
words and maybe classmates couldgive their opinions according totheir
first impressionsor perspectives about the personwhois defining
him/herself. It canhelp students toknowmore about their classmatesand
about themselves.
This activity is special for students whoare just knowing eachother (1st
grade), because withgames like this they can get to know more about their
classmates, andthey can be surprisedabout similarities or differences
betweenthem. The respect, tolerance andaffectionwe expect to achieve
by doing this activity, are important aspects toconsider whencreating a
good rapport in the classroom.
3. FIND THE LIE
Level:elementary/secondary students.
Materials:asmall piece of paper and a pencil for student.
Procedure:Each student has towrite his/her name on the piece of paper
and three sentenceswithinformationabout her/himself. One of those
three sentences will be alie, and the classmate whoreceives the paper
will have toguess whichone is the lie and why he/she thinks so. The facts
are supposedto be credible soit won’t be so easy to guess whichone of
the sentences is not truth. Students willbe able toask just one question
to confirmor be sure about their answers.
This activity is very interesting todoin groups where there are people
who don’t know too much betweenthem, because it’s afunny and
different way to get toknow each other.
4. Level:elementary/secondary students
Materials:copybooks andpens.
Procedure:This is a very simple game or activity whichwouldwork
perfectly if we do it at the beginning of a class relatedtoJobs. It consists
of asking students towrite downon their copybooks tenwords relateda
specific topic relatedtothe unit, for example:Name tenjobs where you
have touse uniform. It’s like a brainstorming, but students will have
about 30 seconds tothink about the tenwords.
It’s a very interesting activity because the ideais toactivate previous
knowledge, and alsoit can be used as a tool to check the objective of the
class at the endof it (students readagainthe words they wrote and
correct the spelling or addsome more, in order tohave as more key
words as possible).
5. The A to Z game
Level:elementary/secondary students.
Materials:marker.
Procedure:This activity has to be done at the middle or at the end of the
class ideally. The procedure is the following:the teacher writes all the
letters of the alphabet onthe board and establishesatopic, in this case,
for example: Jobs. Students have togo to the board inorder and write a
word next toany letter fromthe A tothe Z (everybody will participate,
evenif the alphabet was already completed. Inthat case, the next students
will have towrite a word that begins withthe letter “A”).
It is a good activity topractice vocabulary, tocheck spelling and
pronunciation.
6. The Because Game
Level:elementary/secondary students.
Materials:none.
Procedure:The first student has tosay a sentence inPast Simple Tense, but
it has to be relatedtothe Unit 1: Jobs. The teacher will write anexample on
the board so students canfollowthat model, and also a list of some verbs
they could use will be writtenon the board. The secondstudent has to
repeat the sentence that was saidby his/her classmate andhe/she has to
add another sentence inPast Simple Tense, using the word“because”as a
connector, for example:“I workedin a farm last year because I needed
money”. Each student has to repeat just the last sentence saidbefore
her/him, not all the sentences that have beensaid. The ideais not to repeat
verbs toomany times, thoughit can be done. This activity is usedto
reinforce the past simple structure and the ideais making students tospeak.
They will probably have pronunciationor grammar mistakes but the ideais
to know how much vocabulary they know about the topic and alsoto
improve their speaking skills. At the endof the activity or at the end of the
lessona general feedback is done in order toreinforce pronunciation, the
past simple structure andgrammar mistakes.
