The document discusses the active and passive voice of verbs. It defines the active voice as when the subject performs the action, and provides examples like "The college students defended their research study yesterday." The document also defines the passive voice and notes a verb can be transitive, needing a direct object, or intransitive without one. Examples are given to illustrate the difference between transitive and intransitive verbs. Finally, it asks which example sentence uses the active voice.
7. Active Voice
-The subject performs the action.
Example:
The college students defended their research study yesterday.
Subject Verb Direct Object
8. Remember :
An active voice may contain Transitive Verb or
Intransitive Verb.
See the difference:
Transitive verb needs direct object (receiver of the
action.
Intransitive Verb doesn’t have/need direct object.
17. Which of these sentences is in the active
voice?
1. The teachers are all passionate.
2. The teachers talk honestly during the
recollection in the school campus.
Voice of the Verb
This tells whether the subject performs or receives the action.
2 TYPES OF VOICE
Active Voice
Passive Voice
At this moment, I will discuss first the Active Voice.
The sentence is the Active Voice when the subject is the doer of the action.
Example: The college students defended their research study.
College students is the subject. It performs the action defended. Research study is the direct object (receiver of the action defended).
Meaning the verb in the sentence in active voice may have direct object or not.
Try to see the difference:
For a SENTENCE in the active voice that consists of transitive verb. The Subject “boy” is the doer of the action “dribbled”. It has direct object “ball” which receives the action dribble.
For a SENTENCE in the active voice that consists of intransitive verb. The Subject “boy” is the doer of the action “dribbled”. It has no direct object “ball” which receives the action dribble.
Shane will give gifts to the homeless children.
Shane is the subject and is the doer of the action. Shane is doing the giving. Gifts is the receiver of the action “will give”.
Homeless children is the receiver of the direct object (gifts)
Therefore, this active voice consists of transitive verb because the action “give” has direct object “gifts”.
Kelly always eats before leaving for school.
Kelly is the subject and is the doer of the action. There is no receiver of the action “eats”. Therefore, the active voice consists of intransitive verb.
Krishna hits the ball.
Krishna is the subject and is the doer of the action “hits”. Krishna is doing the hitting. Ball is the receiver of the action “hits”.
Therefore, this active voice consists of transitive verb because the action “hits” has direct object “ball”.
I saw a snake yesterday.
I is the subject and is the doer of the action “saw”. I is the one seeing. Snake is the direct object or receiver of the action “saw”. It answers the question: What did I see yesterday?
Therefore, this active voice consists of transitive verb because the action has direct object.
Daryll dances well since high school.
Daryll is the subject and is the doer of the action “dances”. Daryll is doing the dancing. There is no direct object or receiver of the action “dances” but it is still active because the subject performs the action. Therefore, this active voice contains intransitive verb (no direct object).
Remember this Grade 8!
Sentences in the active voice do not use linking verbs because they do not denote action.
These are:
be, am, is, are, was, were, has been
Kathy and Mary are now best friends.
Covid19 is the problem of the world today.
From these examples, are and is are linking verbs. Therefore, the sentences are not in the active voice.
Which of these sentences is in the active voice?
The teachers are all passionate.
The teachers talk honestly.
