Ayurvedic Herbs - Herbs for Pitta

1. Amalaki
Commonly known as amla or indian gooseberry is found all over india. It is
considered to be the best herb for pacification of pitta dosha. This fruit serves as the
richest natural source of vitamin C and contain anti-oxidants which help to remove
toxins from body. In ayurvedic classics this herb is mentioned to be as rasayana for
pitta dosha. Rasayan indicates regular intake of the particular herb for the
pacification of respective dosha. This friut is the main content of the miraculous
ayurvedic formulation chyavanprasha which can be consumed for having disease
free long life.

2. Dadima
This friut has been commonly used as an edible fruit, as well as for medicinal
purpose. In English it’s called pomegranate and is cultivated throughout India. The
sweet and sour taste of this fruit helps to improve the appetite. The fruit also serves
to be a good source of anti-oxidants. In ayurvedic text’s this fruit is mentioned as a
heart tonic which also purifies the blood. The juice of this fruit is best to pacify pitta
dosha. A sweet jam like preparation called dadimavaleha is a good appetizer and
is used commonly in condition like diarrhea, vomiting , fever etc.

3. Draksha
The fruit of this herb commonly known as grapes is used for medicinal purposes. It is
found mostly in humid regions and is cultivated almost all over the world. The fruit is
juicy and sweet in taste and serves to be a good source of glucose. It in indicated in
almost all the disorders of pitta like excessive thirst, acidity, burning micturition and
other such. It is used widely in treatment of jaundice. Consuming 7-8 of dried fruits
daily can help relieve constipation. Nice taste of this fruit makes it very beneficial in
fever for improving appetite.

4. Yashtimadhu
This herb is known as liquorice in English. The root of this herb is used for medicinal
purposes. It is sweet in taste and is used for pacification of pitta dosha. It acts as an
expectorant and is used for treatment of dry cough, cold etc with honey. It has a mild
laxative property and is also indicated in disorders like hyperacidity, heart burn etc.
As per ayurvedic texts the root powder of this herb if taken with milk acts as a brain
tonic.

5. Chandan
Chandan known as sandalwood tree is commonly found in dry regions. It contains
an essential oil which has a good fragrance and is used for cosmetic purposes. The
herb has cooling properties and pacifies pitta dosha. It is indicated in various skin
disorders like burning, eczema, herpes etc. It is common ingredient of face packs
used for improving the complexion. The oil processed with this herb can be used for
performing snehan, shirodhara etc.

6. Kharjura
It appears as a tall palm tree commonly found all over world. Known as date in
english the fruits of this herb are rich in sugars and are used extensively as a
sweetening agent. It is used for pacification of pitta dosha. An ayurvedic cool drink
called kharjuradi mantha is ideal for summers especially for pitta personalities. It
acts as a laxative, expectorant and is used for respiratory diseases and fever. It is
indicated in disorders of iron deficiency as well.

7. Guduchi
This herb is found as a climbing shrub commonly found in the tropical regions of India.
It is used for pacification of pitta dosha. It is known to be anti – infective and is
extensively used in management of chronic fever. It if found to have properties
helping in developing the immune system of the body. In ayurvedic texts this herb is
mentioned to be as rasayana.

8. Ushira
This herb is commonly known as Khus grass and is found all over India. It is the
pacifier of pitta dosha. The roots have got a fragrant aroma. It removes excess heat
from the body and gives a cooling effect. It is indicated for various disorders like
acidity, fever, mouth ulcers, burns, excessive thirst etc. The use of ushira is especially
indicated during summers when it can be added in face packs or used for flavouring
water.

9. Narikela
Commonly known as coconut in English, this tree is found all over the world especially
near the coastal regions. It is used for pacification of pitta dosha. Coconut water is
used in various inflammatory conditions like burning micturition, heart burn, mouth
ulcers, acidity, peptic ulcers etc. The fruit pulp is sweet and is used in various food
preparations. The dried fruit contains oil which is used for head massage in hair fall,
greying of hair etc.

10. Nimbuka
Commonly called as lemon in English this is found all over the world. The fruit is
extremely sour in taste and is used as flavouring agent widely. It serves as the rich
source of vit.c .It is used for pacification of pitta dosha. It is commonly indicated in
disorders of digestive tract like indigestion, acidity, burning, nausea, vomiting etc.
