Science 7 - LAND and SEA BREEZE and its Characteristics
Homely Dining Room and Dark Basement Settings for 1950s Murder Sequence
1. Set 1
After discussion in our group, we decided that setting for the first part of our sequence should look
more homely, in order to create a contrast with second part of murder in the office. We decided that a
dining room that looks old-fashioned will work perfectly as the setting. For this setting. we choice a
small dining room in Ewhurst boarding house. This room has a simple wooden table, which perfectly
fits to the 1950s time period, and dark wooden chairs, with soft, golden-red pattern seats. Another
good thing about this room is that it has big windows at the back, so as we are going to shoot at the
morning, it'll be light in the room, therefore, day light of the first part of the sequence will again create
a contrast with dark second part.
Set 2
The location for this setting we have changed completely; we decided to shot murder in the office in
the TV studio which will allow us to make more abstract and artistic shorts, as well as use a much
darker lighting (we will be shooting during day time). Even though the location for shooting changed,
we still set this part of the sequence in the office. To create a more realistic office, we will use walls
painted into place to make the atmosphere darker. In terms of furniture, we will use a simplistic
wooden task and a dark soft old-fashioned chair. On the desk we will still put a green table lamp,
which is very typical to 1950s time period. And we also will use metal sliding trays, that will
complete a look of the office.
2. Our group went to Ewhurst boarding house to have a look at the living room where we decided to
shoot the first, typewriting part, of the opening sequence. This location will perfectly suit for shoot
because it has a window, which will provide natural lighting for the sequence.
We also decided to have a look around the house for some locations that might be useful in shooting.
We walked down in the basement and Luke suggested to shoot the second part of the sequence (a
murder) in there. We considered this, and decided that it will be practical to shoot the whole sequence
in the Ewhurts boarding house because we will be able to save some time on traveling to locations
and spend more time on actualshooting. In addition, the murder will be shot in a very artistic way
with lots of close up. Therefore, the basement will create a very mysterious, dark and creepy
atmospheres due to white brick walls, which we can use as a background. For this location we would
not need any props, apart of knife and fake blood. The only issue that we might face with shooting in
the basement is the lighting as it is quite dark in there, so we will need to use extra lighting in there.
