3. MECHANISM OF
ACTION
Cetirizine competes with histamine for
binding at H1-receptor sites on the
effector cell surface, resulting in
suppression of histaminic edema, flare,
and pruritus.
Cetirizine is a non-sedating antihistamine
that works by blocking histamine (H-1)
receptors on cells.
It is similar to the other second
generation antihistamines
4. DESCRIPTION
A potent second-generation histamine
H1 antagonist that is effective in the
treatment of allergic rhinitis, chronic
urticaria, and pollen-induced asthma.
Unlike many traditional antihistamines,
it does not cause drowsiness or
anticholinergic side effects.
Cetirizine and other second-generation
antihistamines do not readily enter the
brain from the blood, and, therefore,
they cause less drowsiness.
5. Used to relieve allergy symptoms
such as
watery eyes
runny nose
itching eyes/nose
sneezing
6. Common side effects include
headache
dry mouth
feeling sick
dizziness
tummy pain
diarrhoea.
