2. OBJECTIVES:
Infer the characteristics of stars based on the
characteristics of the Sun.
describe sun’s characteristics as a star
create a graphic organizer of the characteristics of the
Sun.

4. Agree or Disagree:
1. The Sun is actually a star.
2. The Sun is made up of gases: 25% hydrogen
and 75% helium.
3. The surface of the Sun is about 10,000 degrees
Fahrenheit.
4. Our Sun is considered as “dwarf star”.
5. Without the Sun, life won’t exist on Earth.

5. LET US READ THE ARTICLE:

6. 1.Based from the article, is Sun a
star?
2.Like the sun, what is a star made of?
How are stars formed?
3.How did the author compare the sun
to other stars?
4.How important the sun is to
earthlings?

7. Based from the article, is Sun a star?
SUN AS A STAR 2/8/2023 7
Sun is a yellow dwarf star, a
medium-size variety that’s fairly
common in our galaxy. It converts
hydrogen to helium through nuclear
fusion.
It is a big, glowing ball of gas. In its
core, it combines hydrogen into
helium, as every star does, to
generate a sufficient amount of
pressure so it dodges the bullet of
collapsing under its own gravity
8. Like the sun, what is a star made of? How
are stars formed?
SUN AS A STAR 2/8/2023 8
The sun formed more than 4.5 B years
ago, when a cloud of dust and gas called
nebula collapsed under its own gravity.
As it did, the cloud spun and flattened
into a disk, with our sun forming at its
center.
Stars are born within the clouds of
dust and scattered throughout most
galaxies. A familiar example of such as a
dust cloud is the Orion Nebula. Turbulence
deep within these clouds gives rise to knots
with sufficient mass that the gas and dust
can begin to collapse under its own
gravitational attraction.
11. How did the author compare the sun to
other stars?
SUN AS A STAR 2/8/2023 11
Compared with the billions of
other stars in the universe, the sun is
unremarkable. But for Earth and the
other planets that revolve around it, the
sun is a powerful center of attention.
Our Sun is an average sized star: there are
smaller stars and larger stars, even up to
100 times larger. Many other solar systems
have multiple suns, while ours just has one.
Our Sun is 864,000 miles in diameter and
10,000 degrees Fahrenheit on the surface
12. How important the sun is to earthlings?
SUN AS A STAR 2/8/2023 12
It radiates light and heat, or solar
energy, which makes it possible for life
to exist on Earth. Plants need sunlight
to grow. Animals, including humans,
need plants for food and the oxygen
they produce. Without heat from the
sun, Earth would freeze.
14. Evaluate:
1. Why do we need to study first the characteristics
of Sun before studying other characteristics of the
stars in our galaxy?
2. If the sun continues to burn its hydrogen for
another five billion years or so, what is likely to
happen to Earth?
