Editorial of the Month
WHO IS THE ENEMY OF INNOVATION ?
HERE is HBR south asia: December 2015 issue. I was searching for an article on
"Negotiations" as I was to conduct a session few days later. The title was also
attractive : "How to win before even the bargaining begins Page 45. While flipping
through the pages, I bumped on page 73 to find out a scholarly script on "Who is the
enemy of Innovation ?"Before reading the article my estimate was that the author will
say: "You are your enemy"
However as the luck would have it, author gave very nice description of "functional
fixedness", "design fixation" and "goal fixedness". The author came out with a smart
way of brain storming.
THE example of Titanic given by the author is amazing. Let me quote a few lines to
illustrate. "On the evening of 12th April 1912 RMS Titanic colluded with iceberg in the
North Atalantic and sunk two hours and forty minutes later " All of us know that out of
2200 passengers only 705 could survive. Author continues.." Imagine how many
more could have been saved if crew members had thought of iceberg not as just the
cause of disaster but a life saving solution. The iceberge rose high above the water
and stretched some 400 ft in length."
IT is really a brilliant idea
that life boats might ferried
people there to look for flat
spot. true. The Titanic
itself was navigable for a
while and might been able
to pull close enough to the
iceberg for people to
scramble on."
FRIENDS, have you understood who is the enemy of innovation ?
THINK...think...think.
Happy reading

Event of the Month
Startup India – Standup India
On Saturday, the 16th January 2016, Vigyan Bhawan, the Convention Centre
in New Delhi was jam-packed by more than 1300 your persons braving the winter
morning chill. No, they had not gathered for a rock concert or some similar
entertainer, but had come to witness a landmark day for the startups. They were the
startup founders, innovators, investors and
would be entrepreneurs who had come for an
initiative rolled out by the Government.
It had its genesis in the startup India
Campaign announced by Shri. Narendra Modi
in his Independence day sppech on the 15th
August 2015, in order to accelerate the pace of creating jobs since the employment
growth had slowed down.
Startup is a new and smart concept of an industrial activity / business or
service unit which is based on an innovative idea and technology. Having explored
the traditional methods of industrial activity, a new era of startups has emerged all
over the world. Considering the large number of youth and available opportunities for
employment, India too, couldnot stay away from this concept.
The 19 point action plan announced by Shri. Modi unveiled various measures,
some of them are as under.
- Criteria for a startup entity has been clearly defined.
- Creation of a corpus of Rs. 10,000 Crores.
- Setting up a credit guarantee fund of Rs. 2500 crores.
- Self certification ending the inspector raj.
- Facility of startup mobile app and portal.
- 3 years tax exemption and exemption from capital gains tax.
- Single point contact for all the necessary formalities.
The launch was attended by some prominent
Indian startups such as Inmobi founder Naveen
Tewari, Mapmygenome CEO Anuradha Acharya
and global giants such as Uber founder Travis
Kalanick and Softbank Chairman and CEO
Masoyoshi Son, etc.
The entire government machinery of concerned ministeries and departments
had been present to guide the people & promised all the help & assistance to them.
This looks very promising for emerging business and sets the right tone for
the development and growth.

TED Talk of the Month
TED TALK :Whatyour doctor won’tdiscloseDuration; 15: 42 min:sec
Filmed in: Sept 2014
Brief:
Wouldn’t you want to know if your doctor was a paid
spokesman for a drug company? Or held personal beliefs
incompatible with the treatment you want? Right now, in the US
at least, your doctor simply doesn’t have to tell you about that.
And when physician Leana Wen asked her fellow doctors to
open up, the reaction she got was … unsettling.
Bio of the speaker:
Dr. Leana Wen is the Baltimore City Health Commissioner. A physician and public
health advocate, she has travelled the world listening to patients’ stories. Born in
Shanghai, she was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, a reporter with The New York
Times’ Nick Kristof, a fellow at the World Health Organization and the Director of
Patient-Centred Care Research in the Department of Emergency Medicine at
George Washington University.Inspired by struggles during her mother’s long illness,
she wrote When Doctors Don't Listen, a book about empowering patients to avoid
misdiagnoses and unnecessary tests. As an outspoken leader among a new
generation of physicians, she served as President of the American Medical Student
Association and as Chair of the International Young Professionals Commission. She
also helped create Who’s My Doctor, a campaign for radical transparency in
medicine. Read her own transparency statement, and find more resources
on TEDMED.In October 2015, she wrote a blanket prescription, or "standing
order," in Baltimore City which covers anyone trained to administer naloxone, a
medication that reverses the effects of drug overdoses. Under the order, medication
will be available on demand to everyone with the proper training to use it, potentially
saving many lifes that might have been lost to overdoses.

Some Useful Online courses of the Month
Technology and Ethics :Course at a Glance: 3-5 hours/week English
The meteoric rise of technologies used in our everyday life for profit, power, or improvement
of an individual's life can, on occasion, cause cultural stress as well as ethical challenges. In
this course, we will explore how these multifaceted impacts might be understood, controlled
and mitigated.
Instructors
Robert BaileyThe Ohio State University
Categories :Information, Tech & Design : Humanities ; Social Sciences
About the Course
When everyone begins pursuing their rights to life, liberty and pursuit of
happiness we are bound to step on each other’s toes. This begs the need for
regulations. And this leads to the question as to “what is moral behaviour”; and what are the
ethics that emanate from the selected definitions of moral behaviour. There is no dearth of
defined moral behaviour created by religions and their leaders, business persons, politicians,
philosophers, and in some cases “the everyday person on the street”. / Example
technologies at play today include nuclear energy; biological manipulations for warfare;
robots for taking care of the elderly, and enhancing human capability; the use of technology
for surveillance; the cultural changing power of the media which can create unlimited arrays
of images real and virtual to support a point of view; and the internet with its world wide
connectivity. / We need to look into social/technology assessment, the transfer of the
technology as it is placed into practice, and the techniques/processes that are available for
control within the legal, political, institutional and attitudinal environment within which the
technology is placed as a way of protecting our rights to life, liberty and pursuit of
happiness.
Course Syllabus
Week One: Introduction to Technology, Ethics, and Culture

  • 2. Feb15, 2016 [MANAGEMENT DIGEST – ISSUE - 31] M a n a g e m e n t D i g e s t Page 2 Editorial of the Month WHO IS THE ENEMY OF INNOVATION ? HERE is HBR south asia: December 2015 issue. I was searching for an article on "Negotiations" as I was to conduct a session few days later. The title was also attractive : "How to win before even the bargaining begins Page 45. While flipping through the pages, I bumped on page 73 to find out a scholarly script on "Who is the enemy of Innovation ?"Before reading the article my estimate was that the author will say: "You are your enemy" However as the luck would have it, author gave very nice description of "functional fixedness", "design fixation" and "goal fixedness". The author came out with a smart way of brain storming. THE example of Titanic given by the author is amazing. Let me quote a few lines to illustrate. "On the evening of 12th April 1912 RMS Titanic colluded with iceberg in the North Atalantic and sunk two hours and forty minutes later " All of us know that out of 2200 passengers only 705 could survive. Author continues.." Imagine how many more could have been saved if crew members had thought of iceberg not as just the cause of disaster but a life saving solution. The iceberge rose high above the water and stretched some 400 ft in length." IT is really a brilliant idea that life boats might ferried people there to look for flat spot. true. The Titanic itself was navigable for a while and might been able to pull close enough to the iceberg for people to scramble on." FRIENDS, have you understood who is the enemy of innovation ? THINK...think...think. Happy reading Dr. S.G.Bapat Chief Editor Mobile :9881468504 (sham.bapat@yahoo.com)
  • 3. Feb15, 2016 [MANAGEMENT DIGEST – ISSUE - 31] M a n a g e m e n t D i g e s t Page 3 Event of the Month Startup India – Standup India On Saturday, the 16th January 2016, Vigyan Bhawan, the Convention Centre in New Delhi was jam-packed by more than 1300 your persons braving the winter morning chill. No, they had not gathered for a rock concert or some similar entertainer, but had come to witness a landmark day for the startups. They were the startup founders, innovators, investors and would be entrepreneurs who had come for an initiative rolled out by the Government. It had its genesis in the startup India Campaign announced by Shri. Narendra Modi in his Independence day sppech on the 15th August 2015, in order to accelerate the pace of creating jobs since the employment growth had slowed down. Startup is a new and smart concept of an industrial activity / business or service unit which is based on an innovative idea and technology. Having explored the traditional methods of industrial activity, a new era of startups has emerged all over the world. Considering the large number of youth and available opportunities for employment, India too, couldnot stay away from this concept. The 19 point action plan announced by Shri. Modi unveiled various measures, some of them are as under. The launch was attended by some prominent Indian startups such as Inmobi founder Naveen Tewari, Mapmygenome CEO Anuradha Acharya and global giants such as Uber founder Travis Kalanick and Softbank Chairman and CEO Masoyoshi Son, etc. The entire government machinery of concerned ministeries and departments had been present to guide the people & promised all the help & assistance to them. This looks very promising for emerging business and sets the right tone for the development and growth. Dr. A.M. Joshi (aemjoshi@yahoo.co.in) Mobile : 9423001601

Or held personal beliefs incompatible with the treatment you want? Right now, in the US at least, your doctor simply doesn’t have to tell you about that. And when physician Leana Wen asked her fellow doctors to open up, the reaction she got was … unsettling. Bio of the speaker: Dr. Leana Wen is the Baltimore City Health Commissioner. A physician and public health advocate, she has travelled the world listening to patients’ stories. Born in Shanghai, she was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, a reporter with The New York Times’ Nick Kristof, a fellow at the World Health Organization and the Director of Patient-Centred Care Research in the Department of Emergency Medicine at George Washington University.Inspired by struggles during her mother’s long illness, she wrote When Doctors Don't Listen, a book about empowering patients to avoid misdiagnoses and unnecessary tests. As an outspoken leader among a new generation of physicians, she served as President of the American Medical Student Association and as Chair of the International Young Professionals Commission. She also helped create Who’s My Doctor, a campaign for radical transparency in medicine. Read her own transparency statement, and find more resources on TEDMED.In October 2015, she wrote a blanket prescription, or "standing order," in Baltimore City which covers anyone trained to administer naloxone, a medication that reverses the effects of drug overdoses. Under the order, medication will be available on demand to everyone with the proper training to use it, potentially saving many lifes that might have been lost to overdoses. • 7. Feb15, 2016 [MANAGEMENT DIGEST – ISSUE - 31] M a n a g e m e n t D i g e s t Page 7 Some Useful Online courses of the Month Technology and Ethics :Course at a Glance: 3-5 hours/week English The meteoric rise of technologies used in our everyday life for profit, power, or improvement of an individual's life can, on occasion, cause cultural stress as well as ethical challenges. In this course, we will explore how these multifaceted impacts might be understood, controlled and mitigated. Instructors Robert BaileyThe Ohio State University Categories :Information, Tech & Design : Humanities ; Social Sciences About the Course When everyone begins pursuing their rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness we are bound to step on each other’s toes. This begs the need for regulations. And this leads to the question as to “what is moral behaviour”; and what are the ethics that emanate from the selected definitions of moral behaviour. There is no dearth of defined moral behaviour created by religions and their leaders, business persons, politicians, philosophers, and in some cases “the everyday person on the street”. / Example technologies at play today include nuclear energy; biological manipulations for warfare; robots for taking care of the elderly, and enhancing human capability; the use of technology for surveillance; the cultural changing power of the media which can create unlimited arrays of images real and virtual to support a point of view; and the internet with its world wide connectivity. / We need to look into social/technology assessment, the transfer of the technology as it is placed into practice, and the techniques/processes that are available for control within the legal, political, institutional and attitudinal environment within which the technology is placed as a way of protecting our rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. Course Syllabus Week One: Introduction to Technology, Ethics, and Culture Week Two: Expressing Your Ethic Week Three: Technology Impact Assessment Week Four: Social Impact Assessment Week Five: Technology Diffusion and Transfer Week Six: Controlling Technology Diffusion and Transfer Week Seven: Course Reflection Suggested Readings :Professor Bailey will share online resources here and there throughout the course. To get you started, here are a few articles  The Ethical Implications of Global Climate Change  The Islam-Online Crisis: A Battle of Wasatiyya vs. Salafi Ideologies?  Hindu Ethics  Islamic Law Allows Husbands to Divorce Their Wives on Facebook  Good and Evil in Technology as a Question of Christian Values Course Format: The class will consist of brief lecture videos. There will 2 small peer review writing projects along with 4 quizzes throughout the course. FAQ Will I get a statement of accomplishment after completing this class?Yes. Students who successfully complete the class will receive a statement signed by the instructor. Other than an Internet connection, what resources will I need for this class? You will only need to obtain required reading materials (note: these will be provided online as well). What is the coolest thing I'll learn if I take this class? You will learn how to understand possible impacts of technology and ways to control them in your society and around the world.
