Vocabulary Development
Etymology: The word ‘formalism’ derived from the word ‘form’ or
structure. The ‘ism’ is a belief or an approach of looking at things.
Critique (verb) means to critically evaluate, analyze or give careful
judgment in which you give your opinion about a literary work.
Critique (noun) is a detailed evaluation or analysis of a literary piece.
Critic is a person who judges, evaluates, or analyzes a literary piece.
STRUCTURALIST/FORMALIST APPROACH
- Holds that the true meaning of a text can be determined only by
analyzing the literary elements of the text and by understanding
how these elements work together to form up a cohesive whole.
- It is an approach that analyzes what the work means (theme), and
how it conveys its meaning (style), the relation of theme to style.
Literature is a form of knowledge with intrinsic elements--style,
structure, imagery, tone, and genre. Structuralist / formalist
approach gives a literary work status as art, or as a great work of
art, and how all of its elements work together to create the reader's
total experience. Formalist criticism is evaluative, it differentiates
great works of art from poor works of art.
