Dr Lydia E Beckler MSc
At the age of seventeen I got involved in working with young people with learning difficulties
and have since then worked in a variety of capacities and organizations. Having trained as a
youth worker I thoroughly enjoyed my work with young people and training the staff that
worked with them. As I continued to get promoted I found that my passion had grown to
become more involved with the work with the staff rather than exclusively the direct work
with the young people. It was my studying for my Masters that introduced me to
psychoanalytical theory and psychosocial practices. I have used my knowledge in my work,
both as a practitioner, a trainer and supervisor.
Since moving to Crete I worked on my thesis for my Professional Doctorate in Social Work
whilst also adjusting to a new way of life and learning Greek. Five years ago I accepted an
offer to work for friends looking after holiday villas as Ineeded to work, my freelance contract
writing and updating policies and procedures was terminated due to financial cutbacks. This
developed to the point where I became the business manager. Clearly I have learnt new skills
in customer care and property management however, this work is not my true profession.
On completing my thesis in early 2015 I took time to return to Ethiopia and work voluntarily
for two months for Selam Children’s Village in a consulting capacity to develop their
residential services.
I am an experienced team worker, manager, trainer and skilled presenter. I have enjoyed
putting these skills to use in my recent work with organizations in the child care sector,
working as a trainer for residential staff and foster carers as well as working with the senior
managers to explore developing a therapeutic organization. Although the child care sector is
the one I am most familiar with the skills I have, particularly in management and staff
development, are transferable to any sector. I enjoy working with details as well as seeing the
big picture. It is with these skills in mind that I am now looking for new challenges. I am a
calm person and combined with my training this has enabled me to help individuals think
creatively about problems they face in their work and find solutions.

Selam Children’s Village March and April 2015
Working as a consultant I evaluated the work of the two children’s villages with particular
attention to the residential facilities, the work of the mothers and social workers. Following
the evaluation I worked with the management team and social workers to develop a set of
standards for the homes and care practices. In order to implement these standards the
following training was given by me:
ī‚§ Basedon the agreed standards I devised an audit systemfor the homes, Service managers
and social workers were trained in using the auditing tool.
ī‚§ I gave training to the social workers and developed a case work model to ensure every
child’s care is overseen by a named social worker.
ī‚§ I trained the social workers so that they may train mothers in implementing the Care
Standards across all the homes.
I produced some policies and procedures related to the areas where the training was given
and hope to continue to work with Selam to improve on its child care practices, particularly
in the areas of child protection and recruitment of ex-residents.
