UNC Asheville National Bulldogs are Beautiful Day is a day in April designated by the UNC Asheville Alumni Association to show appreciation to alumni volunteers for their time and service. And, UNC Asheville Alumni Season of Service is a time of roughly (3) months for alumni to serve their local communities in the name of UNC Asheville through group and individual volunteer projects. Projects will be alumni-led and reflect the diversity of alumni interests and passions.

1. UNC Asheville “National Bulldogs are Beautiful” Day
and Alumni (Spring) Season of Service
Purpose:
UNC Asheville alumni are makingadifference everyday. One monthof alumni recognitioncannotshow
infull the University’sappreciationof alumni service andaccomplishment,andone seasonof service
cannot meeteveryneedof the community.But,honoringalumniachievementand bringingalumni
togetherinservice willbothcause a greatimpact.

weekinApril focusedon inspiring,recognizing,andencouragingpeople toseekoutimaginative waysto
engage intheircommunities.
In mid-April,duringthe UNCAsheville StudentandAlumni LeadershipAwardsbanquet,the UNC
Asheville AlumniAssociationwill honorselectedalumniawardrecipientsfortheiraccomplishmentsand
service toUNC Asheville,the community,state,andnation.
In late April,onNational Bulldogsare Beautiful Day,the UNCAsheville AlumniAssociationwill celebrate
Bulldogpride andspiritandrecognize alumni volunteerservice toUNCAsheville. A blurbonthe day,
the historyof UNC Asheville’smascot,andAlumni Associationrecognitionof itsvolunteerswillbe
featuredinthe April alumni e-newsletter.Inaddition,asmall giftof appreciationwill be senttoselect
alumni whovolunteeredfortheiralmamaterthroughoutthe pastyear.
Finally,startinginApril andendinginJune,the UNCAshevilleAlumni Associationwillencourage alumni
to volunteerinalocal service projectinrespective communitiesaroundthe countrythroughoutthe
springseason. Thisopenperiodof service andcelebrationof Bulldogspiritandpride willdemonstrate
to all inyour regionthat by workingtogether, Bulldogs meetchallengesandaccomplishgoals.
2. National Bulldogsare Beautiful Day
Description:
At UNC Ashevillewe've alwaysknownaboutthe splendorthatisthe Bulldog.Since the university'sfirst
sportsteamswere fielded,ourmascothasbeenthe bulldog."BulldogsAre Beautiful Day"isachance for
the rest of the country to recognize the special charmof thiswonderfulcreature.Italsoprovidesan
opportunitytocelebrate the differencesthatmake eachpersonunique.
History of the UNCAsheville Mascot
OriginallycalledPuck,afteracharacter inShakespeare'sA MidsummerNight'sDream, he waslater
knownas Chug-a-lug,thenWinstonandeventuallyRocky- the name he bearstoday. Rocky'sstatue sits
outside betweenthe Justice Centerandthe Sherrill Center.Enteringfreshmen,departingseniors,and
innumerableexamtakersrubhisheadforgoodluck.
The UNC Asheville Alumni Associationalsotakesthisdaytothankour Bulldogalumni fortheirsupport
of the university.Byhostingregionalevents,participatinginservice programslike TopDAWGS,and
showingtheirpride inUNCAsheville,ouralumni continue toshow the worldthatBulldogsare
beautiful!
Alumni Season of Service
Description:
StartinginApril and endinginJune,the UNCAshevilleAlumni Associationencouragesalumni tojoin
togetherandvolunteerinalocal service project inyourrespectivecommunitiesaroundthe country
throughoutthe springseason. Thisopenperiodof service andcelebrationof Bulldogspiritandpride
will demonstratetoall inyourregionthat byworkingtogether, Bulldogs meetchallengesand
accomplishgoals.
Since volunteerservice cantake place throughoutthe entire springseason,there will be more flexibility
and opportunitiestofindaservice site thatreallymeanssomethingtoyou. Sowhat countsas service?
Anything! Cleaningupparks,volunteeringatshelters,workingwithanimals –but alsohelpinganypart
of yourcommunitythatneedsahand. Coach yourchildren’slittle league team?Thatcounts.Volunteer
at your child’sschool?Thatcounts,too!We oftenforgethow much we do inour everydaylife isin
service toothers,andwe want to recognize membersof the UNCAsheville communitywhodevote their
time andeffortto givingbackto others.
Service workcan take place inlarge groupsor onyour own. All service will counttowardsrecognitionin
nextyear’s National Bulldogsare Beautiful Dayandinmakinga meaningful contributiontoyour
community.
