How to Activate Your Networking Power!
Networking is an essential component for career success, especially in the legal profession. Have
you ever thought about how networking could benefit you? Experts say that networking can keep
you well-versed, teach you fresh concepts and keep your creative juices flowing. Here are 5
simple ways to tap into your innate leadership and interpersonal skills to boost your confidence
and networking power!
1. Set Career Goals for Yourself
Write down the goals you wish to accomplish and the skillsets you seek to develop. This will
come in handy as you begin to interact with your professional peers. Be positive -- others may
have similar goals and can often share vital information that can help you achieve yours.
2. Take Initiative…Be Bold!
Step outside of your comfort zone within your own office. Each month set a goal of getting to
know 2 or 3 co-workers a little better. Take the initiative – start a conversation in passing or
approach them at an office function. Find out exactly what they do and discuss projects, clients,
day-to-day experiences and how it relates to your job functions.
3. Expand Your Network
Don’t limit yourself: networking can go far beyond your hall, floor or office. Become a member
of a professional organization. Professional legal networks such as NALS, NALA, Legal
Secretaries International and Toastmasters frequently host events and opportunities to build solid
face-to-face connections with professionals outside of your office.
4. Step Up… Volunteer
Offer your help on a work-related project or an out of the office firm event. Volunteering sets the
foundation for building a rapport with your co-workers and superiors. Demonstrate the genuine
will to help without feeling contrived. You’re not being inauthentic – you’re being a leader.
5. Follow-Up and Follow Through
Once you’ve established some professional connections, don’t forget the follow-up. Draft a
quick e-mail immediately after meeting someone. Be memorable: include something interesting
that you’ve learned and/or discovered that could help continue the conversation and deepen the
relationship. Set an alert on your calendar reminding you to follow-up in a timely fashion.
Whether you’re just starting your career or you’re a seasoned professional, networking can
increase your productivity and open doors to new opportunities. Ready…Set…Activate! Happy
Networking!
