there are variety of only partly satisfactory
answers depending on the reasons for asking
the questions.
3. Often we are interested in how many words
someone know or uses. For example, if we
are interested in how much “sight vocabulary”
a learner has (words that are known well
enough to be recognized quickly and
accurately)

learning stems mainly from the direct

vocabulary learning needs to be more broadly
based than this.
