Overall Internet Data Usage to impact
Checking our emails, updating our Facebook statuses, surfing the web, etc. – it has all become second nature to
most of us yet for many low-income families, paying for internet packages per month is a luxury they hardly can
afford. The Free WiFi at the I-CAN Centre, offered to its members, offers them the opportunity to be connected to the
outside world. Based on the comparison of user registrations and WiFi users, we discovered that many citizens do
not have adequate WiFi-enabled devices that allows them to connect wirelessly to the WIFI.
The number below displays the number of citizens (I-CAN members) that have signed up for WI-FI at the Centre
from Sept 2015 - March 2017.
The Smart Cape technology is an initiative of the City of Cape Town which is used within the I-CAN Centre and
provides citizens with 45 minutes free internet access per day.

How we do it
Community Learning
Community learning is a teaching method that promotes student learning through active participation in
meaningful and planned service experiences in the community that are directly related to course content. High
quality community learning blends academic learning, practical experience, personal exploration and reflection
on student roles and involvement in their communities. In various skills programmes G-CITI employed com-
munity learning (complete assignments and projects that are community based) as a tool to empower citizens
with digital and entrepreneurship skills.
Micro – Learning
Most skills programmes was instructor led for citizens who never used a computer before. Other citizens that
are acquainted with technology through phones and other mediums immediately responded to instructor-led
learning.

Online / Blended Learning
The evolution of technology has led to online and blended learning. Blended courses (also known as hybrid or
mixed-mode courses) are classes where a portion of the traditional face-to-face instruction is replaced by web-
based online learning. Various skills programmes were offered web-based, where citizens had to learn from
video-tutorials to follow instructions

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have
penetrated all areas of contemporary life. In this context,
digital literacy has become much more than the ability to
handle computers – just like traditional literacy and numeracy,
it comprises a set of basic skills which include the use and
production of digital media, information processing and retrieval,
participation in social networks for creation and sharing of
knowledge, and a wide range of professional computing skills.
Digital literacy improves employability because it is a gate skill,
demanded by many employers when they first evaluate a job
application. It also works as a catalyst because it enables the
acquisition of other important life skills. The Microsoft Office
Specialist, international certificate, allows students to become
Digital Practitioners in specific office applications.

Mobile App Development
The traditional pen-and-pencil system presents tons of barriers
to student access and connection, whether it be the plight
of a master narrative, language disconnect, etc. By instilling
adept digital skills, students can break through these “walls”
and become producers of knowledge.
Allowing students to find their own learning resources (via the
web, cloud-based learning tools, etc.) and analyze the sources
benefit creates a true personalized learning environment.
Students are no longer given a static text set that dictates
how and what they should learn. Instead, developed digital
literacy skills afford students the ability to seek out and
utilize knowledge resources that help them create a personal
learning connection. The mobile app development project
allows learners to build a mobile app that is based on their
creativity and innovation.
Students will be able to:

Gaming Development
Video games are a ubiquitous part of almost all children’s
and adolescents’ lives, with 97% playing for at least one hour
per day in the South Africa. The vast majority of research by
psychologists on the effects of “gaming” has been on its negative
impact: the potential harm related to violence, addiction,
and depression. We recognize the value of that research; but
latest we have seen gaming supporting learning. The trend
has changed into multi-billion-dollar industry. Various games
have been developed to allow internet users to learn online
through MOOCs.
Today, most young people spend 60% of their time playing
games. In an ideal educational game setting students learn
how to solve complex problems. The problems within a game
typically start off easy and progressively become more difficult
as players’ skills develop. Players are motivated to learn, in
part, because learning is situated and occurs through a process
of hypothesizing, probing, and reflecting upon the simulated
world within the game. In addition, the goals are clear, and
information becomes available to players at just the time that it
is needed to reach each goal. Making sense of that information
becomes an intrinsic goal of gameplay. Player engagement, flow
and difficultchallenges have especially been often referred to
be they keys to successful game-based learning.
Students will be able to:
• Develop and storyboard a video game idea, and develop
a design document.
• Implement a complete 2D game, including the gameplay,
character design and animation, multiple levels, the user
interface, and game audio.
• Implement the general outline of a 3D game, including game
object kinetics and dynamics, and camera management
in a three-dimensional coordinate space.
• Use an understanding of the necessary algorithms, data
structures, and optimization for successful video game
development.
• Apply effective engineering methodology for game
development and testing.

38. Access to Broadband
Total Number of People Registered on our WIFI Hotspot 540
Broadband is not a luxury; it's a necessity. Affordable broadband is a building block for healthy communities. In the 21st
century, broadband Internet access has emerged as more than just an information superhighway—it has become critical
infrastructure to connect citizens, businesses, and communities alike to new opportunities. Yet for too many communities,
the promise of fast, affordable, and reliable Internet access remains unrealized. Expanding high quality Internet access in a
community, whether large or small, can yield a multitude of benefits for residents— from improved health services, to new
opportunities for small businesses, to higher property values, to a stronger local economy. High-quality Internet access is
not only a necessary infrastructure for the 21st century, but also the collaborative process of expanding that access itself
has civic benefits.
The I-CAN Centre (Genesis) offers citizens 300 MB Free WIFI Data per month. This enables citizens to access emails, communicate
through social media and researching possible job opportunities. Citizens are also trained how to sign up for WIFI and use it
effectively. We have 540 citizens signed up for WIFI access. As the number are growing daily, the awareness of digital access
has become a reality to many. We aim to empower more citizens with access to broadband usage of digital skills.
